Questions Galore

If i relocated my air filters, from above my radiator to in front of my grille, would it make ne difference in power or gas mileage? Or am I better off leaving it alone. If i were to change it I would do like a K&n cone filter and new piping so its getting direct air. Any thoughts?

Also....my exhaust is dying, I noticed my o2 sensor is before my cat, this means i can take off my cat and it wont affect my engine right? Emissions is not a problem, I dont have to take it here. And when i replace my exhaust, I kno Ive asked before, but what size should i go with, i kno my tip is 3inch thats how i bought it, it just seems to big to me.

what do you think would happen if i elimnated the cat and ran like 2 1/4 pipe back to a muffler?

you have the dual snorkel intake, leave it alone, grab some k&n's and gut the airbox, with our motors its better to leave the cat unless you have some serious mods done.

2 1/4 is the best size to go with for exaust

ok, if im leaving the cat, then should i go with maybe a higher flow cat?...mines pretty rusty and im sure its next to go. And how would one go about gutting the airbox? any pics?

There is NO reason to keep the cat unless it's a smogging place state.
That said
I'd go with 2 1/2" pipes
Some here have gone to three inch pipes with success, too.
Lucky you have a decent air inlet set up.
Try doing that air cleaner trick to a Firebird. Nope won't fit under the hood.
You want coolest outside fresh air into engine not hot under hood air!
2 1/2" pipe set up wil be most cost effective for you.
And honestly, just gut the cat & put it back, it makes a great perfect fit straight thru pipe!

Take the filters out, remove the four screws to get the baffles out of your way, then just cut out the bottom. I got lazy and just removed the baffles and drilled a bunch of 1/2 inch holes in the bottom of mine.

Just more air flow and i noticed more of a pull at higher rpms.

you probably won't see any gains with this, i did it, but now wish I hadn't. The thing that you have to remember is that these dual snorkel intakes cam on the 350 TPIs too. I figure that if they can flow enough air for a motor litterally twice the size of ours, they can more than outflow anything we can dream of with out A LOT of mods.

Everytime it rains I have to be careful going through puddles now that mine is empty because water splashes up there and gets the filters all wet...bad news.

Oh, and if you're gonna go through the trouble of removing the cat and gutting it, just completly replace it with a straight pipe. If you put the cat back on there, it'll become an expansion chamber, the exhaust will hit it, expand and cool, then it movers slower through the rest of the system.

sweet thanks.

As for the exhaust, I think I will keep my idea of taking out the cat, and doing a 2 1/4 exhaust.....2 1/2 to 3 inches seems too big for such a small engine. I dont want a loss in backpressure. And if anything I'm looking for horsepower gains.

Yeah, this last January when it was POURING out here, I was going down the freeway and popped on an O2 rich code because the filters got wet, stopped flowing and the ECM couldn't compensate enough for it. That sucked...my pour car was slower than it usually is.

the dynomax catback 2.5 in exhaust is a nice lil upgrade for our engines. 2.5 isnt too much at all for ours. you can run headers, catback and no cat and wont have any problems w/ backpressure at all. when i put my catback on i noticed a power gain too. i replaced my cat w/ a high flow convertor from catco. only a 1-2hp difference between that and no cat.

ive gutted my airbox as well, you pull the filters and can see pavement. i havent had a problem since i did it w/ water, but i havent really driven it a whole lot in the rain either. i also noticed a bit more pull in higher rpms when i did it.

The only reason I said gut the cat is
My previous CC was empty when I removed it.
The guts were already out. Placed at head of muffler!
That said, I was running an empty convertor for many months prior to recent installation.
I can't say performance was better or worse before or after I swapped in the new magno flow cat.

well ive heard many suggestions on size for exhaust, I will probably buy a set of pacesetter headers, and take out the cat.

But I'm lookin for a better sound...nothing too loud and I would like noticable power.......so you say 2.5 huh?

most people seem to be happy w/ the dynomax setup for both sound and power.... and price
