Should i add a oil cooler?
well its coming up on the time to start assembly of my new motor, and i was wondering if i should go with a oil cooler.
i figure it couldn't hurt only help.
any opinions?
its a 2.8 thats getting the ari 3.1 stroker kit, phase 2 cam with crane 1.52 roller tip rockers, and ported heads.
still waiting on an intake manifold that impresses me. the truleo is way to expensive for being steel, i'm hoping am91 gets one or doward puts on out

winters here consist of alot of rain, and the rare snow storm, although the last few years we've had a few bad years

Just run synthetic oil. Corvettes all lost their oil coolers in 1993 when they started coming from the factory with Mobile 1 in the crankcase.

I run Mobil 1 EP 15w50 ($24 for a jug of 5 qts @ wally world!) + Delco PF52 oil filter (larger one)
The only way to really tell if you need an oil cooler, is to check your oil temps. I don't like mine to be more than 200º
If you can spring for it, get a *good* bar and plate style cooler - I intend to get one later, but for now it's not needed.

well this motor isn't gonna be together for a while as the one in my car is fine, i'm just getting all the parts and everything organized to do the build all at once.
and since this new motor i want ot last for a very long time, i'm trying to find the best list of parts to do it right the first time

Listen to D.
------------
I would work more on water temp.
My car was a slug once the temp rose to "normal stock"
With a constant lower temp range my car runs crisp and responsive all the time. If you get them water temps below 200 you know the oil temp is fine.

Yes, if I had the choice between a nice aluminum radiator, or an oil cooler, I'd do the aluminum radiator. The cooler the motor, the cooler the oil will run.
I will say this - if you decide to get an oil cooler, get one with a thermostatic bypass

A couple of suggestions....
a) go with 1.6 rockers, full roller. Be sure to rebuild your heads accordingly, and go ahead and port them out.
b) the Phase 2 is an EXACT copy of the Melling MTC-5 camshaft available through Autozone for $108. Just keep that in mind.
c) roller timing chain.
d) the 3.4 oil pump has a 3/4" pickup, instead of our 5/8" I believe the 3.1 high-volume pump from Autozone is also a 3/4" pickup. Get that oil pump
e) I'm still working on the intake. I'm redesigning it, actually, as I had a freakin' awesome dream, and saw the design that is PERFECT for our motors!! Starting from scratch again on that
It'll be middle section, and upper plenum. Not saying anything till I get closer to it being complete

They are. The MTC-5 cam is nice over stock, but still relatively wimpy. I would definetly recommend the 1.6 rockers - they are completely worth the money, IMHO. Otherwise, I might say stay with the 1.52s (get some full rollers, though!) and go with the Phase III cam.
Just remember you'd need the Fiero valve covers, too, with the 1.6s!
If you do choose to go with the Phase III cam, either be running a stick shift, or a higher stall automatic (something around a 2400rpm)
