While driving on the freeway yesterday, the car completely shut off and did not start up right away. I waited for about 10 minutes and the car turned over. The day before that, I was in the parked posision and the car shut off and started back up right away. Today the same thing happened. What should I look for to fix this problem, what is the problem? whats making the car cut off and not start up? any help is apreciated.

 

I had an 88 buick lesabre that did the same thing and it was the coil pack. When it got too hot it would cut off. After coolin down it would start back up. Could possibly be your problem. Coil could be going bad. I would check that.

 

Change your ignition module in your distributor. The GM factory part number is 10482827, available from any dealer.

 

get yours tested for free before shelling out $$$ for a replacement


you didn't happen to have a recent engine fire did you?

 

No engine fire on mine. I acctualy have recently changed my ignition modual along with putting the required stuff on the bottom so it will not get hot. Is the coil easy to change out? How do I test the coil?

 

you cain do te screwdriver to a ground source to test the color of the spark, and also bring it in for free (impendence) testing also.

 

Have the cat converter checked.

 

You said that you changed the module already...was it a G.M. unit and did you put grease on the bottom? If 1 answer is NO, then change it again...

 

The shutting down and not starting could be two totally separate issues as well. I had problems with my car shutting off, came back as a faulty module, replaced it with stock GM unit. However, at the same time I would have trouble starting it back up, but this happened even when my car hadn't shut off and I was just trying to start the car. Turned out that my starter solenoid was getting too hot and would not allow my starter to kit in. Replaced it with a better one and to date not problems. There was a complete discussion about this earlier in the summer, I believe it was called Car dies when hot, or car won't start when hot.

I understand that it may have been a summer issue and it is now getting to be a bit colder, but you may find some interesting recommendations and even a solution that may be able to address your situation.
