oil pressure loss?!?
hey i got an oil leak right by my oil filter.. im sure its not the oil filter but do these 2.8l firebird and camaros usually have a common leak around this area and what could it be the oil filter assemebly or the pan gasket?
the car has been sitting for 9years and didnt have a leak until i pushed the car kinda hard while driving it today. it leaked quite abit but most of it burned off the exhaust pipe until i stopped the car..
any replys will be greatly appreciated.. thanks

Car: a car being parted out
Engine: blown up
Transmission: in peices
common oil leak spots on these cars...
Distrib seal, front/rear mains and biggie is valve covers.
If it was leaking by oil pump, just how did it get burned off by exhaust? It is not near it.
But no, the oil filter location is not a common leak place (unless block is cracked there). If you double gasket'd it, did not tighten enough... though...
If you ran the pan low enough to activate the low pressure switch... you are either leaking really bad, or not checking the oil level enough.
If it was leaking bad enough to drain it in a day, you will easily see where it is coming from as there will be oil EVERYWHERE near the leak.
I would do the following...
1. get a bunch of oil 7-9 qrts.
2. Get car off the ground and supported enough where it will be safe for you to be under it while it is running.
3. Get a full face mask to protect from oil spray.
4. have a friend start the car while your under looking for the leak.
If the underside is totally covered, you will need to get some degreaser/cleaner and clean it first, then do above.
if you even THINK about getting that oil stop leak you need to be stripped, tar'd and feathered. Then have your car taken away from you.

my guess is that the oil filter is not seated properly or it is the wrong filter.. I have an oil leak that look like it gushes (timing cover /oil pan gasket) and it looks like oil is everywhere and it only leaked 1/2 a quart the entire summer... so if you went through a whole pan.. you would definitely notice where the leak was from... it would have to be almost running out.

the car has oil and a brand new filter and it is the correct one... the leak looks like its coming from the pan gasket and it made a small puddle of oil probably 4 inches wide.
i put some noisy lifter fluid in the car eairler today along with half a quart of oil.
so far it leaked a small puddle only 1 time and then it stopped... now its just a small drip. also the check engine light went on before this happend and stayed on once i parked my car in the drive way...
whats the possibilitys of the pump being bad?
I just bought a new transmission and a used rear end and i really can afford to have this car blow an engine on me.

what is this noisy lifter fluid?.. is it like honey? if it is that is not good... sorta like that non-smoke stuff.. that can clog things up in a hurry.... prety much efectively stopping oil flow.... at which point it could do any number of things if oil is not getting where it needs to.

no it was not thick at all... the fluid was blue and was just a thick as 10w30.
im thinking maybe i should replace the distributor and oil pump.
does that sound like it should fix my problem? where can i get these parts if i need them

alright i just went outside to check out the car again.. i turned it on and the oil pressure went to 40psi right away.. i reved it up a a bit to see what would happen and the pressure raised as it should.
I put the car in reverse to back out of the drive way and as soon as it went into gear the check engine light went on, the pressure started to drop, and the engine bogged down.. i shut it off before it died on its own.
i dont understand what could be causing this problem.. someone please help me.

wow.. no idea there.. pull the code for it.. you can do it by hooking a piece of wire between two of the pins under the dash.... forget which ones they are and it will start the SES light flashing... it does it three times in a row for each code.... that would probably tell you a great deal about what it going on...
