doward, dale, anyone else w/ the MTC-5 cam

granted from the time i drove my car w/ a stock 3.4 cam till i drove it w/ the MTC-5 cam was a good 5 months, but i feel that its lost some power, not a ton, but some. and thats just going by SOTP feel. from what i read, there was a lil torque loss, but upper end pulled like hell, mine does not seem to do that. i did also do a lil work on the heads. all i did was grind out any sharp edges to make air flow better and match the lower intake to the intake side on the heads. this shouldnt affect my power at all. so does anyone have any ideas for me? and i havent run at the strip yet to get 1/4 times to compare to, but i just dont feel like its where it should be, or even was.

this may not be comparing apples to apples, but a few guys w/ a 3.4 in a 4th gen w/ less mods than me are running close to 1 sec faster than i am. whether theyre honest or not is up for grabs, but my times have never sounded right to me.

Mine still has a vac leak that I havent tackled. So untill I do that, I really shouldnt judge it.

Now, the first one I had for that 100 miles, no vac leak. It seemed like it had some major top end pull. But I also rarely drive in them rpms, so I'm a little disappointed, but whatever.

The MTC-5 and the stock 3.4 cam, IIRC, are almost identical.

Why would anyone buy the MTC-5 cam then? Why not go to a bigger aftermarket cam?

Nope, more lift. Stock is .394, mtc5 is .420. I belive the degrees are slightly different too.

The MTC5 pulls better everywhere. I ran my 3.4 TBI with the stock 3.4 cam, then switched it to a MTC5 looking for more pulling power (a joke even with a 3.4 and 3.73s). I had a MTC1 in my otherwise stock 305 TBI at the time and it ran much better and pulled better all through the powerband than the stock 305 cam did. The MTC5 did a better job than the stock 3.4 cam pulling my 3,500# boat. I would have to say that it made more power from off-idle all the way to redline than the stock 3.4 cam with most of the improvement from 1,200-4,500.

FWIW, this was in my 1987 GMC Jimmy 4x4 (originally a TBI 2.8/700r4/3.73s).

mine does not seem to pull harder, especially in the lower end. id say even at best. i dont really notice any difference anywhere in the power band.

What is your timing advance at? I think that on my lame factory TBI tuning, I was running 12* BTDC with the set timing wire disconnected. The MTC5 likes a little more timing than stock.

On my TBI 305/350 builds I typically run 6*
