Valve problems anyone?

Well heres the thing. My brother purchased an 88 Camaro RS from his good friend a few weeks ago for $400. The engine had either a bad push rod or valve. He's come to the conclusion that it's the valve. He was planning on fixing the engine and selling it to make money so he can do more to his Tupperware (06 Saturn Ion Redline that runs 14.78 stock). He hasn't had time to do anything to it so I offered to fix it for him. He said that if I just give him $400 I can have it. So I agreed and paid the small fee.

So, my question is, Where can I find valves? Is it worth it to do them all or just the one? Also I have been working on four stroke dirtbikes for a few years now and the valve spring is around the valve, so my question is, are the valve in this engine of the same design? If they are do they come in little packages of them assembled so that all I have to do is drop it in and only make a weekend of it? Also the engine is said to be pretty bad (by my father, whos house its at right now) and will probably need a rebuild or swap, but I won't know for sure until I open it up.

Thanks for all of the help I will hopefully receive.

if it needs valves done, youre gonna have to pull the heads, and youre probably gonna need a valve and seat grind to make it worth your time. if the valve is bad, more than likely the seat is too. youre into a bit more than you thought it sounds like my friend. id say it would be cheaper to go to a junkyard and find a set of heads, pop them on and slap it all back together. then you can sell it or do whatever.

Thanks. I was planning a stop at my local pick-a-part to maybe find a new engine for it. It won't hurt to just try that first and then if nessasary replace the motor.

an ion redline aint runnin a 1/4 in 12.78 seconds stock.... its 205HP supercharged 4cyc... the corvete runs those times with a 400HP V8 and probably the same weight...unless you meant 1/8 mile..

as for the RS, if you dont wanna really mess with it, or soup it up, junk yard heads and sell it as was suggested (sell it for like 600 or somthing, make some money off it.)

Sorry about the time I ment to say 14. I was thinking about my friends worked 98 Eclipse GSX who finnaly broke the 12's this wednesday. I was thinking I can get $2000.00 for it because the milage is low and the body is perfect with House of Kolor blue on it. I'm told that its miles are so low because it was stored for 9 years due to body damage. Thats why the body is perfect. The friend that has the GSX also has a very nice 4th gen. Camaro with a 3800 Series V6 that is completely worked as well (nothing stock except the block). He wants to do a swap to an LT1 so he gave me the idea to swap for his along with the manual transmission. I was thinking that it would be a nice project car, but i would like it to be done before June of 07. Also, I was doing a run through on Ebay and saw mulitple M90 superchargers that are made for the engine, so the thought of a fun project car came to mind. So depending on weather he does his swap in time will decide what happens to the car. I also found out that my parents had a mutual fund for me and that its pushing $2000.00. They only started it with a little bit and just let it grow over time, and this was a surprise to me so as with all teens I'm just itching to spend it.

unfortunately for thirdgen v6 camaros,
there isnt much u can do to it..
if u go into 4th gen v6, u'll have a lot more aftermarket options though.

or if u have knowledge and experience for fabricating,
u can maybe build and run a custom turbo like few of our member has done.

theres quite a bit you can do to it actually. maybe not as much as an LT1, but theres quite a bit. look at the thread about aftermarket parts and itll show you a bunch of stuff. not to mention the 3.4 swap, P&P, and places will custom make stuff like cams, pistons, etc. its not as bad as people think, they just have to do a lil digging. try a search and youll find a ton on the "performance" subject. oh and if you are gonna build it up, start w/ subframe connectors, i feel theyre a necessity, not a mod.

well heres my 2 cents! lol Unless i missed it. how do you know for sure its a valve? is it smoking ?? running bad together with the noise??tapping ect??.. reason im asking is because these cars in "my opion" makes all kinds of noises that could be conciderd to not be operating correcly.,such as our injectors thay are known to tap noticably? just wander if your positive of your problem,. are any plugs washed? or dry? any way just my two cents!

If you can get $2,000 out of a V6 thirdgen you're doing pretty good. Unless it's perfect I don't see that happening. In fact most 6cyl thirdgens are sub $1000 cars in running condition. With a 'bad valve' which could be any number of misdiagnosed problems up to and including a possible blown engine, you're sitting on a $150 car.

You're going to have to diagnose the problem for yourself, or have someone with a fair amount of knowledge diagnose it for you. If it is a valve, I'd have to wonder why it failed? Timing chain fail? If it did then you probably need multiple valves. 2.8 & 3.1L parts are rediculously expensive (far more so then a 350). You would be further ahead to find a complete running junkyard pullout with a warranty and swap the entire engine then trying to fix one that's blown up. When you're done you'll have more invested then the car is worth.
