Help!:I want to gut out my smog?!!

I have read some threads that mention you can gut out your smog pump. But peps I've talked to say you can't gut out and just use the pulley assembly. That it will destroy it. I've got a 92 RS 3.1. Once I open the smog will it be common sense to gut out and reassemble to use as just a pulley? And do i need to disconnect the hoses and cap them after i gut out the smog? And the biggest question is will it have any ill effects on the any systems? Thanks...I'm a newbie glad i found this site And it rocks....best place for any info you might need and some that you never thought of!!!

when i got rid of my smog pump, i also swapped in my 3.4. i got rid of the lines going to the exhaust manifold. you can delete all the hoses and lines and all that by a screw in the vacuum line and getting plugs in the exhaust manifolds, or getting pacesetter headers which require the delete of those anyway. for the life of me i can not remember where the big vacuum hoses from the pump go to or what i did, but i know they are non-existant anymore anywehre on the car.

I got rid of the smog pump and run a shorter belt. I did have to build a custom alt bracket out of the old smog pump bracket.

I don't know about gutting it, though I can't imagine the parasitic drag would be much less if gutted. I didn't notice any gains in performance or change in mileage. I did get a less cluttered engine bay however! Of course I haven't had to pass the sniffer test yet either!

ive never heard of gutting it. i just got rid of mine and got a shorter belt, no modifications needed. 88s came with or w/o smog pump so i guess thats why i could just ditch it. but id think the easiest way would be to just remove it, rather than taking it off, gutting it (if possible) and putting it back together.

RSFreak, what size belt did you use?
If I just eliminate my smog pump it seems like the belt will rub itself when going aroud the alternator...
