how to improve gas mileage

hey my buddy has a 95 camaro convertible. I was wondering how to help him boost gas mileage so he doesnt have to switch to an import. any ideas would be great.

get off the throttle once in a while.. stay under 50% throttle.. shift under 2300 rpm.. dont use the AC, run with either the top down or the windows down.. oh ya, a tornado works pretty good too.. drive smart, dont drive stupid, plan your day to eliminate excessive trips..

Those tornadoes have been said to HURT gas mileage since it restricts flow- I'd do a search and read what the other members have been saying about them.

tornado, im unfamiliar with that what is it more info please. I know about the throttle i tell him that all the time, b/c i got 25mpg on the highway in my 350. would a good air filter and tune up help much? also i know keeping air in tires, but how much would thinner tires help. with less surface area.

not enough to justify the expediture of new tires. a tuneup may help MPG. do any of the tuneup parts need replacing? the first thing i would look into is the spark delivery system. look at/clean the plugs. test the resistance on the plug wires and inspect for wear, pull the cap and look at the rotor. clean off any carbon buildup on the dizzy points or rotor itself. then check the coil. chiltons manual will have instructions about how too inspect them.

whoa, easy there.. idk about you but i gained 1-2mpg on my ranger after i put a tornado in it.. i was initially getting about 13mpg, then i was getting 14-15 after that.. no change in driving style.. yup i know its pretty crappy gas mileage for a 4.0L but it is what it is.. my father's van also gained 2-3mpg..

you would gain the same MPG if you decreased the size of your air intake. your car is using less fuel because it is getting less air. wrap ductape over half of your airfilter and you will see the same result.

Three ounces of Acetone to ten gallons of gas will save you about 15% on mileage while increasing octane .

and how much does the acetone cost?

there are no "magic" ways to increase HP drasticly for verry little $$
there are no "Magic" ways to increase MPG drasticly for verry little $$.

that said there are free/cheap things you can do. here is what i ahve done aside from engine maintinence to my 3rd gen to improve mialage.
swapped to aluminum break drums
removed unneccisarry clutter in engine bay (AC delete/ CC delete/ AIR Delete/ extra bracketry delete)
light weight manual 4th gen seats (out of a cavaler)

soon I will be doing a
Spoiler delete (those things are heavy)
PPD delete (also heavy)
I am also on the lookout for a set of lexan T-Tops to use during summer for weight loss. will run the glass in the winter casue they seal better.

things you could do but i don't think i will
cut out most of your hood skeleton
gut interior (no way, i like my full interior)
remove spare tire and jack
remove tools (I NEED those)

for sure to ck the plugs, but make sure you get a new air filter. A dirty air filter just chokes em down. Even tire pressure and easy on the GO pedal!

If you are a skeptic, Google it on the "gas saver" forums. I consumed about 15% LESS gas after the Acetone treatment. It took three tanks filled to notice the difference, but went from 280 miles per tank to 320 in my F150 that sees over 30k miles per year (I fill 21 gal at least twice a week for the last two years). This has been proven over and over, in fact more than once here on TGO. If you don't believe me, try it for yourself and tell me I'm wrong...

I've heard that acetone is bad for the fuel system for its acidity level.

Not when diluted. My F150 has 179000+ miles on it, and I'm not going to sacrifice the reliability for fuel consumption. The oil has been changed every 3k miles (with the exception of 2 oil chenges that went 6k). If diluted to 3oz per 10 gallons, you do the math, 128oz=1gal. I experienced no problems, only gains. Again, I urge you to check out some fuel saver forums. My long-time mechanic buddy (who owns a shop) was pleasantly surprised at the results. Again, if you are a skeptic, look it up - the guy who discovered this has over 500k on an engine that was torn down, only to discover NOTHING clesn cyl/heads without a lot of carbon on them. The Acetone causes more COMPLETE combustion in turn saving gas (especially with FI vehicles). With this I am done with the coversation, take it of leave it...

im always cautious when there is an ingrdient that needs to be added to increase mpg. for two reasons one i hear alot of them do bad things to an engine founded or not its still scary. Secondly every time ive done the math the gain you get is ofset by the price of addetive.

BTW, Acetone is $13 a galon at Home Depot. Again I leave it up to you to do the math.
No, Xypher - you aren't being a ****, just I'm speaking from experience. When I spend over $300 a week on gas, every little bit helps. ESPECIALLY when you talk about 15-20% of this ($45-60 a week between two trucks).

If the price of Acetone is $13/gal and you are using 4oz per 10 gal = 80 gallons of gas for every gallon of Acetone. By saving 15-20% on fuel mileage, my truck gets 15mpg + 15% = 17.25mpg x 21 gal = 47.25 more miles per tank or more than like adding three extra gallons per tank. Even if you only pay $2.50/gal (avg price in SFL) would be like saving $10 per tank(one gal of Acetone does 20 tanks) . Now here I go doing math that I didn't want to do in the first place. You guys can believe me or not, but through experience - it's true! My dad uses it on his 76 Vette and 2004 F150. I use it on my 2002 Navigator, 2000 Excursion, 1986 BMW 325es, 1990 Firebird, and my 1998 F150. The list of my friends include a 2003 Surburban, 1986 Vette, 1994 Astro, 2003 Silverado, Nissan 300ZXtt, etc etc...

neat... does it effect power output? has anyone dyno tested anything running acetoned fuel?

No not here that I know of, but the butt-dyno says it adds 1.3 HP, lol.

Actually top down will hurt you MPGs (horrible aerodynamics), the AC is better if you traveling above 50mph, and the windows down is better if your traveling at less that.

Tornados are a bogus rip off. Since you obviously don't belive the scientific data to back that up, think of it this way. Why doesn't every car come with one from the factory if a two dollar part would have such an impact? How come no one with any knowledge of how engines work has one on their car? How do they expect the air to stay spinning after it passes the throttle blades goes through the plenum down the runners past the intack valve and gets compressed proir to ignition? Also most MAF car have screens on the MAF sensors design specficly to straitin the air out. And how in the hell is putting something in the way of the incoming air sapoed to creat more power?
Still not convinced? Next time you are on a long highway road trip drive the first tank of gas with it in and the second tank without it and see the results

i'd like to get one of these and do a dyno run with it in, and then one with it out. see just how much HP they steal.
