Axle/Gears: stock 10 bolt 3.08's
timing

ok heres the deal my last harmonic balancer came apart so i went and got a new one. my timing before was set at like 56* and now its at 34* btdc i know thats not right but thats the only place it has the good throttle response and when i set it to 10-12* it is a real dog and dosnt let me go over like 35 mph can anyone help?

Did you install it correctly?
EDIT: To check, remove #1 plug and locate TDC of compression stroke by looking at the dist w/cap removed. Then look at the mark on the balancer and see if it is 0* on the indicator. If not the balancer may have been installed in side out.

did u unhook the est wire before setting the timing???
if u dont and u hook up a timming light at idle it will read 20*+

the ballancer can only go on one way. i am betting on EST connector

I was wondering about that, what stops it from going on backwards? I know there is a key so it the bolt holes can only go one way, but what if you flip it over?

it would not meet the oil seal properly, and your crank pullys would not go on right. it sticks out farther on one side then the other.

OOOOO, you're not supposed to pull off the balancer with a gear puller, lol (just bustin ***** )

u can damage/pull the outer ring right off the balancer like that, ur supposed to use a balancer that has the bolt holes in it,the bolts screw into the center hub so all pulling force is applied to the middle hub and not the outer ring

i set the timing at ten and 12* and its still a reall dog at launch and during acceleration. i set it to 33 and its alive but i did notice ive got a rod knock so im gana put a 3.1 crank in it and replace the bearings. that will get me by tell i get my trans for my v8 sorry guys the v6 is a lot of fun but too many problems it seems like so ill have the motor and trans w/ tach and msd ign. up for sale in the next few months w/ a new clutch and rebuilt wc t5
