Anyone know of any othr companies that make a peformance harmonic balancer for our motor?
Info I have that is current as of today is ATI performance is the onlyone I can find anymore. they have a 6.325" aluminum/rubber 3 ring unit taht has a rotation mass of 2.40 lbs and a total shell weight of 3.9 lbs. Hub weight is .85.
What I was really looking for right now and to my dissappointment is discontinued is the Fluidampr unit that used to be sold part # 712615.
Anyone know of any other manufacturers for a 60*V6?

Yeah, I have had that planned for the motor I am building but the need for a new dampner came up sooner than I thought. I was planning on using a V8 alum series Fluidampr but I would still have to find out if any aftermarket V8 crankpulley in the offset and diameter range I would desire (if any would work) or I would have to just have one custom made which would take me 8-10 weeks if ordered today- I can't wait that long.

The standard V8 TPI crank pullies wil not work. They offset of the serpetine belt is about 1" more towards the front of the car off the crank dampner in comparison to the offset of the 60*V6 pullies.

 

Is the one on your 2.8 acting up? I'm thinking somewhere I might have my 3.1 still and you could have it tell you order what you need.

If you want to do that, let me know and I will hunt this weekend for it.

 

is the v8 balancer a different thickness or something? reason I ask is that I'm thinking you could have your 2.8 pulley re-drilled to fit the bolt pattern on the balancer.

 

Jay, Yeah it is. The inertia ring is cockeyed so I pulled it off there. I have the one off the 3.4 I bought a few years back and it has about 60k on it but looked decent. The only problem is a friend had my removal tool kit at that time and I did not think I was ever going to reuse that one so I pryed it off with a crowbar- It came off surprisingly easy but it did mash one side of it very slightly with the look like it was drops a few feet and hit the ground on the edge.
I just tried quickly swapping that one to see if I could get lucky and the wah-wah vibration subsided about 50% but is still there- I think this one is wasted also. It is not a U-joint(they are new and the wah-wah matches engine speed not vehicle speed so its from trans froward by deduction.). I am not hearing anything from the flexplate- Was thinking a posisble cracked flexplate but I do not hear any knocking usually associated with a crack flexpalte- I have cracked a few of these in other cars over the years- so I am basically rulling that out and just going to assume it is the crank dampner still giving trouble.
I appreciate the offer of your old one, but I think I am just going to cut any losses and buy the ATI unit since I can transfer it to the new motor once i have that finished someday- still not in a hurry, I only have about 50K on this current motor and its running strong. Alan, Yes, I thought of that too and will be asking my buddy Tom if he could run it over to his family shop and get that done this weekend (Cunningham Connectng Rods). I am just a little worried about a tad offness the balance would be from the new set of holes since one of the old 4 will still be used and two new ones drilled on the other side instad of te other 3 of original 4. I am going to ask Tom aslo if he has capability to rebalance it with the appropriate machinery. I know htat is very small, but I would feel better if it were flawless and feel even that very small of balance could be a longevity issue.

 

Only 50k and its acted up? geesh.

Just trying to help a brother out with parts I dont need anymore. Its just going to go to the scrap steel yard otherwise.

 

yeah, I hear ya about the "feel better if it were flawless". So, the ATI unit has 3 holes? you don't think you can have him drill all 3 holes new? (get it spaced right for that) But, if he can check the balance...that'd be even better! any chance that you could post the weight of the ATI unit once you get it?

 

I hear ya Jay- And I appreciate it, But I am thinking I have another problm somewhere that actually caused this. I am going to pull th flex cover tomorrow to see if the torque convertor loosened a bolt on me. I don't drive this car much, but when I do I rip the crap out of it so I do spin this thing up prettry good and it shifts like no other auto you have seen- It hammers into gear and the only thing that softens it is the lack of raw power. here's a chance that maybe a bolt did loosen on me- even thought I blue locktite them. Tomorrow will tell.
Alan, The ATI unit is 60*V6 specific and is a 4 bolt unit that accepts the V6 factory pullies. Its a 3 ring unit, not 3 bolt unit. They offer two versins of the aluminum 6.3" racing pullies for a V6 chev 2.8-3.4- 1) a 2 inertia ring damper unit, and 2) a 3 inertia damper ring unit. Of course the 3 ring unit is slightly heavier ith a broader range of harmonic dampering and robs slightly more HP due to a slightly heavier rotation mass.

 

Update on my vibration problem-

Well, It turns out to be an innocent mistake on my part.

My first Balancer went bad and is a fact from the noticiable cockeyed inertia ring.

Now since my car is an '87- Its the first year of the internal balance motor- The other balancer I put on is from a later internal balanced '95 3.4L V6 so I stick what looks to be a still dencent balancer on the motor and the problem still partially exists- 50% better, but still there.
I fianlly had time this afternoon to pull the flexplate cover off looking for either a loose trans to motor bolts, a loose or cracked flexplate, or a loose convertor......
I spin the flexplate around checking it and low & behold here comes around the weight of an EXTRENALLY balamce flexplate- whoops, my bad- this GM replacement motor I had my next door neighbor friend ( Gordon Autoworks) stick into there about 5 years ago is an external balance motor and I just stuck an internal balanced dampner on it-

Innocent mistake- Problem found and will be fixed tomorrow as soon as I can get a new exterior balanced harmonic balancer. I have too many cars to remember what was done to what.
