Re: v8 alternator compatibility ??????

Depends on the year/make/model of the V8 one. They went through a few case changes. Without knowing the year/make/model/etc, you'd have to see it to compare- if it's the same case it should work.

If the cases are the same but the bolt holes are different, you can usually loosen the outer case screws (the long ones connecting the front & rear halves of the alternator together) and "spin" the case if the bolt holes don't line up with your motor.

Try to check the amp rating too; a v8 alternator from a carbureted '82 f-body without a/c may not have enough juice to keep your 3.1 mpfi happy.

bolt it on and check. if the battery dies you know it is no good.

if you are asking because you are going to BUY it from someone, don't! used alternators are a waste of time and money, just spend the dough on a new one. you will be glad when it does not fail inside of six months. (or 15 miles like the used alternator i got.)

Highly unlikely that it'll work. It's a completely different design alternator.

Even if it was the same case, the same style case was offered in different sizes. Sometimes the size difference is so minor you can't visually tell it's smaller/larger but the brackets won't line up.

Either rebuild your original alternator, buy a parts store replacement, or get the real deal new from a GM dealer.

Re: v8 alternator compatibility ??????

The old style 10 SI alternator will not work on a 3.1. They use the newer smaller case and the clocking for bolting it up is all wrong. Even the later V8 engines with the smaller alternator use a different front half that will not bolt up. At best you can swap the guts and the back half of the housing with the rear bearing to crutch your old one along.

Unfortunately, if you don't already know this information then you are setting yourself up for disaster if you try. Your best bet is to pony up for the replacement alternator at the auto parts store. Get one with a warranty because if they have been rebuilt then they have a possibility of failure built in as well. Next, go to a wrecking yard and get another 3.1 or 2.8 newer style alternator (or keep your core instead of trading it in) and take it apart to see if you can put it back together. If you're still confident, then buy the "iceburg" kit from JC Whitney and rebuild it. If not, take it and give it to the auto parts store for your core charge. You can do that for up to 30 days at most stores.

Good luck!

Re: v8 alternator compatibility ??????

i just had a cromed out 79 350 alternator my dad gave me lying around and my alternator is only charging 13.5 volts so i wanted to see if a new alternator would provide more charging power i think i might just go out and buy one from the auto parts store and call it a day.

13.5 volts is more than adequate charging voltage with 14.2 being optimal. There is most likely nothing wrong with your current alternator.

Even my rebuilt alternator which puts out 140 amps maintains just under 14 volts, my stock 105 amp unit maintained 13.2 (I have a digital dash and a fairly accurate volt meter), so you're doing pretty good to get 13.5 volts from your unit.

Re: v8 alternator compatibility ??????

Sorry, failed to mention I did verify with a multimeter . But I did mention it was a fairly accurate digital gauge, but again failed to say it was aftermarket.
