Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

K, i'm just going to ask the simple questions.

What are all the names of the parts needed to kick the fan on?

The motor is from an 89 Camaro RS - 2.8 Multiport FI.
The motor is in a 90 Camaro RS.

I remember when we first got the motor into the 90 rs the fan didnt kick on. I replaced the relay that is attached onto the firewall and the fan kicked on. Well, now it doesn't. Maybe it's the relay on the firewall again but wtf could cause that.

-------------

On a side not. When we swapped the engines, were we suppose to take sensors that were on the 3.1 and put them onto the 2.8? For instance on the 3.1 there is 1 sensor on the front of the intake. But on the 2.8 there are 2 sensors at the front of the intake. Were we suppose to remove the 3.1 sensor, put it in the 2.8 then take out and block off the other sensor since it's blocked off on the 3.1?

Re: Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

the sensor in our cars is just a temp sensor on the intake. it shouldn't matter if it's from the 90 or 89, as long as they both have the same connector piece. the temp sensor says: 0-229*, keep off. @ 230*, kick on, kick off @ 180? or something like that.

now, check your fan(s) and make sure it (they) is(are) in working order. my 89 has a single fan, i think the 91-92 have duals... what about the 90?

anyways, check the fan motor, it's about $30 @ o'reilly's/autozone/napa/etc. how to check it? take the connector off and hook 2 wires (neg/pos) up to the fan, or (easier way)... barely cut into the fan wire (hot) and hook up a hot wire from the battery to where you cut into the hot wire, if it kicks on, the fan is good.. if it doesn't, it's bad! my fan went bad last year in my 89'. make sure you electrical tape it back up...

K, did the motor test. The fan spins fine. No weird noises.

What connects to this sensor? It's located on the rear passenger side of the engine.

Thats the sensor that tells yoru fan when to turn on and off. There should be a wire connected to that.

ah well then...seems like we found what could be the problem. Where would this wire be coming from?

Should be coming from the drivers side of the engine. I found mines hanging along the tranny when I was having that problem.

Re: Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

hmmm....See now I just talked to my pops about that sensor and he said that that sensor isnt in the 3.1. So I don't think I'll be finding the connection for that sensor, or would I?

Is the sensor to tell the fans to turn on/off (btw, what is the name of this sensor?) located somewhere else on the engine on a 2.8?

Re: Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

Haynes doesn't even know that sensor exists. Not in the manual anywhere. Their wiring diagrams are crap too.
Most auto parts stores call it the "fan sensor". Go in and ask for and maybe bring in the old one to compare connectors. I just replaced the sensor on mine and the brand new one was no good either. Gonna have to try a different brand I guess.

Yep. I don't like the Haynes manual at all. Whenever they show pics it's of a Z28 or some other engine and it annoys me.

Re: Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

Thinking about possibly doing that later on. But for now, I need this fan to kick on by itself.

I guess I'll just try replacing that sensor. I'll keep ya updated.

Re: Ugh.......damn fan not kicking on

Well.....today I had changed the relay on the firewall and a sensor on the intake....fan kicks on now.....only thing i dont like is that it kicks on at 220.....

idk what it was.....the relay or the sensor......well we'll see what happens. I will be keeping an eye on the fan and making sure it continues to kick on.
