A few problems...

Just a while ago I bought a 1989 Pontiac Firebird as my daily driver and in the first week of driving it I've noticed a few problems. First off, ocassionly when I turn the key to start the car it sounds like the starter will grind, and it's really loud too. I'l then take the key out, put it back in and try to start it again and it will start up fine! Next problem is that when i do try to start it up ill have to let it crank over A LOT just for it to catch and once it does catch it idles completely fine and revs up fine. The last problem i noticed is that it takes a long time for the idle to come down from 1100RPMs to about 675RPMs. Would that just be cold start issues? So basically to sum it up:

1) Why would it grind sometimes when I start it up?
2) Why do I have to crank it A LOT for it to start?
3) Why does it take so long for the RPMs to come down when it idles after starting it?

I'm hoping someone will have an idea as to why. Maybe hopefully it's just a tune up it needs??? Any information would be great!

Oh yea and it's a 2.8V6 with a 5 Speed incase anyone wanted to know

Starter is on it's way out. Double check it's positioning with the engine, as well as both the starter, and the flywheel's teeth themselves....

Before anyone can answer, what do you consider "a lot"? Two, three, four seconds...?

If the engine is started when cold, it's going to take a few minutes for the idle to settle down. If it does this when warm, your IAC is more than likely full of carbon deposits (similar to a sticky choke with a carb)....

Also, check the starter mounting bolts. If they are loose it can cause the teeth to not contact properly, leading to that grinding, and eventually a new ring gear and starter.

Dang lol. I had a feeling that would be it.

Actually when i started up in the morning it went on for about 5 and a half seconds. I didnt want to pump the gas cause I think its bad for fuel injected car...I'm also new to fuel injection. Always stuck with carbs and that

I'll look into that too tommorow.

Ya its much easier to catch it quick, whether you just need to tighten it or a whole new starter, Before it chews your ring gear apart.

...Dont ask how I know this...
