2 problems - grinding noise and squeeking noise
When accelerating I sometimes get a grinding noise... maybe comeing from behind the dash? And my Tach likes to dance slightly - flicking suddenly up about 500 rpms and then back to where it was. This is a idle and while driving. Also, when I'm in drive and sitting at a stop light, I get a loud reet reet reet squeeking noise. This goes away when I put it in park or nutral. Any help is greatly appreciated! - Nate

I don't think it's the tranny. The grinding has something to do with the tach I think - maybe I need a new cable that goes from my tach to wherever. The squeeking noise sounds like it's comeing from the engine and now it's gone so I'm guessing I may have gotten some wd40 on my belt while I was lubing the hood latch.

nah the belt is new. Has anyone ever had a grinding noise comeing from thier tach? It's like a buzzing or something. Can I fix it myself?

cool, so me and kukerdan want to know how to fix this. IT looks to be a common problem. There's an FAQ about the speedo cable but that's not my problem. The question is can I lube and/or replace the tach cable myself and is it expensive?

I remember correctly, when I took out my cluster there was no cable on the back. It had 2 electronic plugs on the back that controlled everything. When the cluster was pushed in they were connected. I think this was on the later cars with the 3.1

Ok I'm an idiot. I found out what it was...
Remember I had a post on here about my ac compressor making noise when it engaged (or rather, it made my belt tensioner rattle)? Yeah it was the same thing only from inside that car! Doh! But still... why would my tach flit about like that?
