replacing oil pan... and clutch??
Alright, so my oil pan is pretty much **** so were replacing it in a couple weeks over my winter break. i guess its going to be a reall b**** right? I think i have to lift the engine about 5inches, unhook some exaust parts, and then maybe pull the tanny off. So, im guessing that i should just go ahead and replace the clutch and pressuer plate along with the pan? The mechanic that put my posi in said he could do it for about 600$ but thats a little much since my posi only cost me 135$ to be put in. but from what the guy said is that i have to be able to set the pressuer plate just right so the clutch wont nock and stuff like that. So really should i just replace my cltuch along with the oil pan since im gonna be in that neck of the woods anyway? THx

I'm cheap; I don't replace clutch parts unless they don't work.
That being said, if the clutch is slipping then you should replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing at a minimum. You should also look at the transmission front bearing retainer and see if there are any leaks. Now is the time for a new seal or gasket if you have it apart.
If the clutch is working fine, I wouldn't mess with it. Even if you have to take your transmission out don't mess with your clutch unless you are removing your flywheel to change the rear seal. Then you may want to pay the hundred bucks and put a clutch kit in.

Re: replacing oil pan... and clutch??
All you really need to do is disconnect the exhaust, take of the distributor cap, and lift the engine straight up, you don't even need to disconnect the transmission. I did the oil pan on mine this last spring and I had to lightly tap the pan with a rubber hammer to get it in and out but that was just because the clearance is that close. It is a fairly simple job to do. Being that you don't need to remove the transmission, I wouldn't worry about the clutch unless you are actually having issues with it.

Yep, I replaced my oil pan while the engine was in the car. I unbolted the motor mounts, jacked up the engine+tranny combo with a jack, and just had enough room to get the pan out and in.
Re: replacing oil pan... and clutch??
Also the y-pipe has to come off to get the pan completely out. I didn't take out my distributor when I did mine, the bell housing hit before the distributor.
I made a write-up on how to remove the oil pan with the motor in the car a while back. We don't have the ability to look up "threads started by so-and-so" anymore, but it's here in the v6 section somewhere (detailed down to the socket sizes).

I replaced pan gasket in v6 and v8 w/o removing the transmission or dizzy.
Y-pipe does have to come off.
Not the funest job in the world, but not the worst one I have ever done.
Take your time and do it right, double and tripple check everything before you drop that motor back in the mounts.
