Cleaning up under the hood Shots

I'm embarrassed to pop the hood on my Firebird because its such a mess. I couldn't find a thread like this, so I decided to make one for V6's.

4th Gen LS1's have the !wire, !ground, !traction control, !everything; anything anyone has done for the 3rd gens? esp V6?

Post your under hood shots and tell what you've done to clean up under there.

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

well, they have an auto detailing section just for this kind of thing. but since you asked, use elbow grease on pretty much anything not aluminum or easily removable.for aluminum there is this stuff that you can get at napa for aluminum parts like intake manifolds, brackets, and timing chain covers/water pumps. its supposed to clean it up really well. maybe you could repaint your pulleys and headers if your engine bay starts looking really good. you dont have to focus on the engine either, its just the subject of your pictures. details are important. you can clean up the wiring thats exposed by simply wiping dust off them, clean up the body around the engine, or if you want to draw attention away from nasty stuff, put a little troll doll on top of the engine. people will be so distracted they wont look at all the grime.

I have an under hood cleanup in progress. Polishing alot of aluminum. If you drive your car daily don't try this. I pulled engine, dropped the K-member and springs repainted everything. See it at http://jfhms.homeip.net/Camaro/Engine.html

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

I was kind of talking about rerouting wires or relocating some bulky parts. One idea that comes to mind is the 4th gen washer fluid tank. Ideas, more so pictures of things to clean up under your hood like that.

chevyracingrox, this is v6 specific, so I posted it here.

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

If you start by removing certain systems, you can begin removing many wires. For example, the AC harness is huge and crosses over under the engine on the front. Trace those back to the source and remove them. A lot of wires seem to simply cross from one side of the engine to the other... rerouting those by lengthening and running through custom runways would make things look much nicer. One thing that will make all the difference is painting your brackets. Remove them all, degrease them real good, then paint. Makes a world of difference.

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

I'll get shots of my engine bay. I took out the smog cannister and the EGR with alot of the un-needed vacuum lines. It cleaned up the engine bay alot. And the UIM is painted black.

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

I repainted my valve covers realy glossy gray. new battery and alternator helped. I also passed a small buffer and a fine sand paper to the throttle body and intake manifold. I also painted the black cover for the blower fan and changed the old rusted bolts for nice shiny metal colored ones! and top it of I do about 2 engine shampoos per summer. so my engine bay is spotless.

But I'm still a little ashaimed to pop the hood at car meets because the motor is very small, but I still open it and laugh at it with the other guys and at the same time I die a little inside!!! lol!

I'd post pics but my car is stored for the brutal canadian winter we have here and it's a half hour drive to my car.

Re: Cleaning up under the hood Shots

I hosed my down with degreaser, and power washed it at the local coin wash. Turned out alright, it keeps my hands a lot cleaner. As for wires and stuff, I have some nice Canadian Tire 'Help' Vacuum line T's, which are about the size of a B-52 Bomber...

Haha, but in that case, its ok

Things like painted valve covers, alright, that can count, but where are the pictures?

I would like to see pictures of people who have done modifications under their hood to clean up / clear some space. FOR EXAMPLE: Replace stock washer bottle with 4th gen style. I wanted some unique ideas to steal to clean up my engine bay (NOT CLEAN IT )

It's annodizing paint from Duplicolor. It's a two step process with a silver bottom coat and colored top coat.

I do work in a machine shop. though, and if there is interest I can get parts annodized (and/or polish them). I have an extra 3.1 and 2.8 UIM here as a core, then just send me yours.

...and thanx

Just extend your wires and put the MAF somewhere in line with the new intake tract.

Keep your MAF.

oddly enough my afr (based on aem wideband) is 13.9 wot, 14.4 idle and 13.7-14.3 cruising.

so oddly enough it runs way better...
All thats done to it is that filter, and ac/smog pump delete ( short serpentine belt)
it has 370k miles, and doesnt burn a drop of oil :]
