Fuel issue

I have a 2.8 V6 that i got for 700$ and it wont stay running, Me and my dad fed gas into the carb and it would continue to run... Is it a fuel pump problem or could it be a carb issue?

Other then that it seems to run fine as long as You keep feeding it gas thru the carb. Thoughts? thanks.

Re: Fuel issue

Nobody knows? It'll start right up when You pour gas into the carb but wont start without it, It acts like it runs out of gas and then trys to stall and does stall if You dont continue to pour gas into the carb...

I'd like to get it running and maybe drive it awhile until I get my V8 built and ready to throw in the car and have it as a beater for awhile while I fix my 96's problems. Help would be appreciated greatly, Thanks guys.

Re: Fuel issue

Yeah, Me and my dad will most likely change that and maybe even the fuel filter as well... If that doesnt fix it then will look into a carb... But it doesnt sound like its a carb issue though does it?

Re: Fuel issue

Neither were 3.1's

Only reason I want it running is to make sure evrything else is working fine as in the way it ride, drives and be able to drive it get it inspected and registered and all that... As soon as I get all that straitened out I'm throwing a 383 stroker into the car. I have the core just sitting in my shop waiting for the build.

For what I do right now the V6 good enough for me. These engines are excellent daily drivers. But I perfer a LS1 . Only difference between the 2.8L carb and the 3.1L is fuel injection. In the 60* V6 world (probably goin to get flame for this) Carb < EFI.

well...good luck with that The only v8 Id ever swap in is the LSx...but I dont have that kind of money. So...lets make the v6 fast.

Back to topic...Is there any way to check the fuel pressure on the old carb? I, personally, would hate to have to change the fuel pump just to find out it wasnt the problem.

Re: Fuel issue

on the old v-8's the pump was cam driven. i don't know where the pump is for the carbed 2.8's. due to the fact that u had the engine running by dumping fuel in the carb well it points to bad pump/low fuel pressure to the carb. or even a cloged fuel filter. its pretty doubtfull its a carb problem unless the car sat along time. seals /diaphram can go bad. also check the vaccum hoses to the carb. easliy be a problem there. carbed engines run lower fuel pressure anyways than fi engines.. as for the 383.. well thats alot more weight added and v6's have slightly diff suspension set up than v-8 cars better off getting a donor car suspension or entirely up gradeing the suspension. weight distribution can be a factor in handling.

Re: Fuel issue

The drivetrain and suspension is coming off my 87 GTA as in the 700r4, rear end, sways, and of course the 350 block... Selling the tpi stuff and rebuilding the 350 to a 383s and going carb into my 83 bird.

And we know where the fuel pump is as well and its on the motor unlike the later model FI cars thats in the gas tank... 21$ for a new pump which isnt bad so it wouldnt be hard to fix it if indeed thats the problem.

And heh as for the V6's... Only V6 I care about is my 3.8 in my 96.

Re: Fuel issue

Ouch, you are using a GTA as a donor for a Camaro! Keep the GTA because it is mor valuable!!
Secondly, if you are going to DO the major v-8 engine swap, which involves the transmission, driveshaft, front suspension, engine mounts, exhaust, plumbing, and the many ect's... then I suggest you send it out to a shop for that.
If you can't figure out if the fuel pump or carb is bad, then I am worrying about the transformation you are going to be attempting. My only suggestion is to purchase Kleenex.
