If your talking about the v6 then you'll have to take the upper intake off, bad design.

I never could. I always wanted to so I could adjust the valves while the engine was running, but I'm know going to the 3.4/3500hybrid route.

I think someone managed to do it once, but it required lots of small swivel joints, cussing and busted knuckles. Way easier to take the UIM/MIM off. It can be off and back on in under half an hour once you know what you're doing.

UIM/MIM ????
i just think it would be a major waist of time and money to take the intake just to take the valve cover off and put the intake back on to start the car. being that gaskets arnt exactly cheap

Upper Intake Manifold, Middle Intake Manifold
Intake gasket set is $11. And yes, it's a waste of time, but tell that to GM.

Considering that the only way to get at those bolts is by taking off the intake manifold, how can it be a waste of time and money? But if you want to spend a weekend trying to figure out a way to do it, go right ahead- no one else has managed to do it...

Re: how do you get to the valve cover bolts on the intake side ?
A couple years ago someone, in fact, did get his valve covers off without taking off the manifolds...Like forkvoid had already said. But it takes a lot more work than it should. I personally dont see a problem with $11...but it all depends on if you gots a lot of time or money. Hope it all works out for you either way.
