V6 and V8 use the same driveshaft.

x2.

However, the 2.5" dia steel one I weighted was only like 12.5'ish lbs. Where the lightest aluminum is rated around 11lbs. Unless you broke yours, IMO that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

Check the price of a carbon fiber shaft before you worry about expansion and contraction.

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

I only know of one person that runs a CF driveshaft.

And as mentioned, VERY expensive.

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

wouldn't a lighter flywheel be a better upgrade than a lightweight driveshaft? more difficult to install, but it would probably be lighter for less money.

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

u dont need to lose much rotating wieght for it to be usefull, when it comes to rotating mass every lil bit helps. a lighwieght driveshaft and set of aluminum drums are a great place to start., also rims are an very gpod place to drop rotating mass specially if u have swaped on 16 iroc rims they are very heavy rims, swaping to a lighter wheel will make a very noticiable difference.

The flywheel doesn't spin as fast as the driveshaft, and is easier to balance.

how does the driveshaft spin faster than the flywheel? doesn't the flywheel, spinning with the engine make the same revolutions as the engine and the driveshaft, spinning with the transmission, spin slower? well, I guess that depends on what gear your in doesn't it?

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

on a th350 3rdgear is 1.1 ratio same on a 700r4 in third gear the ds is matched to engine speed once in over drive the ds spins faster then the engine

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

according to the sticky in the transmission forum about the T5 the only time the driveshaft would be spinning faster than the flywheel is in 5th gear, but looking at the top speed thread in the V6 section it sounds like you wouldn't use 5th gear very often if at all for high speeds.

4th gear on an auto car it would spin faster then the motor or 5th on a t5
and 5th and 6th on a t56

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

That would be a recall on vibrations in 3rd gens. And yes, when you would come in with that problem, they would install a 3"dia alumn driveshaft to fix that.

zsta. Trans to diff is driveshaft. Diff to wheel is an axle.

Yes, every pound helps. But if your spending 100'ish on a driveshaft like I was going to when I first read about it. You can get a new cam for that much. Also, as mentioned.... unless you get the ONE driveshaft that is lighter then the steel 2.5" one... you will actually add weight not loose.

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

Quite some time back i bought a CF driveshaft for my V6.
I was considering BMR or ACPT.
Since i was ordering some other parts from BMR i decides to order the driveshaft there.

BMR Driveshafts

When it arrived, i weighed it before i installed it ... came in at 13 lbs ... quite heavy for a CF driveshaft !!!
I should have gone for the ACPT ... but too late ...

Here is a picture of my driveshaft installed.

I think that at Precision Shaft you can also have one made for you ... looks expensive though. But then again ... so was my BMR driveshaft.

Precision Shaft

Somewhere on this website i found a list of weights of common f-body driveshafts :
  • 16 lbs - Stock steel LT1 driveshaft
  • 12.2 lbs - 3rd gen aluminum 1LE driveshaft
  • 12 lbs - LPE aluminum driveshaft
  • 11.5 lbs - Stock aluminum LS1 driveshaft
  • 10 lbs - RK Sport aluminum 1pc driveshaft
  • 4 lbs - ACPT carbon fiber

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

I notice on that list it doesnt show the 3rdgen steels. I remember my 2.5" one being around 12.5'ish lbs. Wonder if they ever made a 3" steel?

Re: aluminum driveshaft?

Sounds like there should be some further explaining on how you got a 13lb CF driveshaft but the numbers you quoted show the CF driveshaft from other manufacturers at <5lbs with every other aluminum driveshaft also weighing less than your CF driveshaft.

You sure they didn't just wrap some CF around a steel driveshaft and give it to you? Why wouldn't you have just returned it? at 13lbs, what's the point of spending all that money when you can junkyard an aluminum one that weighs less and costs a fraction of what you paid?

Well, personally i think it is an aluminum driveshaft with CF wrapping around it.
Since i live in Belgium , shipping something like this from the US to me is half the cost ... add to that import taxes ... so returning it would be pointless ... even if i get a refund, i would barely break even (minus 1 driveshaft).
Since Thirdgens are quite rare over here (well all US cars actually) , you can imagine there are none to be found on the junkyards ...
