Re: 91 3.1 need help..

G'day to you too.

I can think of a few reasons for your problem, but first off - how many miles on the car? The rationale is that you could be having a vacuum leak - which is pretty common on these cars as the intake manifold gaskets, etc. get brittle.

The other obvious question is do you have proper fuel pressure and good spark? A plugged fuel filter, bad injectors or bad fuel pump will also cause loss of power. In addition, when was the last tune-up? What is the timing set at? This gets back to how many miles - is the timing chain loose, did it jump a tooth?

Also, what condition is the cat converter in? If you have an AIR pump and it is not working/leaking plus the cat not working, that will definitely cause loss of power!!

So, many causes, many solutions. Just need specifics to help you out.

Re: 91 3.1 need help..

GTA50
Miles 150,00
Spark good
Fuel filter changed around 18 months ago
Tune up around 24 months ago ( plugs , cap , rotor and leads replaced also the ecm was replaced)
Cat ..does not have one the guy who had it before me cut it out and put a piece of pipe in its place.
Fuel injectors were replaced 12 to 16 months ago .
Thanks

To me the backfire and dies and loss of power would suggest a vacuum leak. On the other hand, no cat and I'm assuming no O2 sensor would also lead me in that direction. So.......do you have an oxygen sensor or was left left abandoned by the previous owner?

Re: 91 3.1 need help..

Still could be many things. You said that spark was good I believe. Have you checked for sufficient voltage to the injectors and fuel pressure being adequate (I know you said the injectors had been replaced - still could have a faulty one). Also, check the injector fuses.

Assuming those are fine, I would next look at the EGR and see if perhaps the gasket is blown through. Alternatively, check if the EGR is functioning properly.

I would also be tempted to do a full tune-up. On these cars, 1 1/2 to 2 years is a long time I have found. Corrosion and/or moisture in the cap, etc....

Did it gradually happen, or did it just start doing this one day?

Could you have picked up some crappy gas somewhere?

Throwing any codes at you/check engine light?

When was the timing chain done? Could it have jumped timing?

Got a fuel pressure gauge you could use to make sure its ok? Might be the fuel pump....

I'd say check the intake gasket first, it's cheap and easy to replace and cause symptoms such as these.... from what I have heard in this organization anyways... not had the pleasure myself...

it doesn't run now at all?

a blown coil couldn't cause this could it?
