average lifespan for a 3.1L V6 '92 rs?

hey i'm about ready to pull the trigger on buying a 1992 RS with a V6 A4, but i have one reservation, and that's the mileage. it's got 183k miles on it, with, as far as i know, original factory components.

how long will this thing last? assume it'll be a daily driver for about 18 months, and assume worse case from it's previous owner.

Generally speaking a 3.1L V6 will last until the car is purchased by someone who knows how to swap in a V8.

Seriously though, it should be just fine as long as it's had regular maintenance. The V6 I just pulled from my 92 had 106,xxx on it, and it ran just fine. I know that me and the last 2 owners of the car didn't baby it, but we did the normal regular maintenance on it.

Like Firebird said, do the usual tuneup stuff, ie change fluids/cap/rotor/plugs/wires, and it should run just fine for a long time as long as the engine isn't making any funny noises now.

My friends had 250,000 miles last i checked. just change the oil and don't let it overheat and it should last 300k+ miles. but expect to change a few things like sensors and water pump.some things will eventually get worn out.

mines on 230k miles, and it just finally died (hard cornering caused oil starvation, spun main and rod bearings). technically, she's not completely dead seeing as i can still start her up, but i'm not driving the old beast till i rebuild the bottom end

Re: average lifespan for a 3.1L V6 '92 rs?

I've got 210K on my 1992 3.1 V6, but blew a head gasket. No biggie, though, It should be back up and running in another couple of weeks. I used to use a 75 shot of nitrous on my engine all the time. I haven't used the nitrous in about 5 years, but never had any trouble with it. Mine looks good and runs fine (except for when the head gasket blew). I can still get about 30 MPG on the interstate.

My dad has a 1991 Sonoma ST 2.8 V6 5spd that has 355K miles on the odometer, and it has never had anything major done to the engine. Regular maintenance, and some items like alternator, water pump, exhaust gaskets, the occasional sensor....
