What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Okay so I have a 91 firebird with the 3.1 V6 and the 5 speed manual.I need to beef up my low end as it has NO POWER OR PULL!!! Now if I am in 4th or 5th and stomp on it, she goes but 1st thru 3rd is garbage. SPEAK TO ME OH TGO GURU's!!! lol
EDIT: On a side note I came across this website that give you the gains of you increase or decrease of gearing. Thought I would share it with you all. It maybe may even get stickied.?.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Correct me if im wrong but a 91 3.1l firebird with the T5 came stock with the 3.42. Id recommend the 3.73. It will let the car rev faster and run at higher rpms. If you really want crazy street fun run some 4.10's. Great on the street; not so great on the highway...you would be doing like 3000rpms with 4.10's on the highway(dont qoute me on that...i lost all my calculations to do it so im guessing)

What kind of fun would the 4.10's provide? I almost got smoked by a damn accord yesterday and that really was the breaking point for me
. I ordered a stage 2 camshaft and lifters, P&P my heads, aluminum rockers, and rods all today I just lost my mind. If I have a damn muscle car I want it to have some PULL and some MUSCLE!!! I just spent a couple grand today and I KNOW the wife is gonna be pissed
, but oh well I needs what I needs lol

LOL, damn ricemobiles. 4.10's will help you out tremendously on takeoff, but limit your top end. Not that it's that important anyway, how often are you really going to be above 100 in this car anyway? If you're going all out why don't you go for headers & tuning stuff? I have some definition files & a copy of the AZTY bin I'll probably never get any use out of I could send you.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Well do you ever run on the expressway or anything like that for any long period of time? Cause let me tell you 4.10's are FUN. You will be ALOT faster from stop light to stop light but you will lack top speed. Seeing as you prolly do go 120mph everyday then 4.10's are alot of fun lol. Most people run the 3.73's tho cause they are fun but also alow you to run on the highway and not worry about it.
I just got your PM btw. Gears dont give you horsepower or torque. They just put it to the ground in a different manner. A low(number speaking) gear will give you slower off the line speed but better top end. A higher(number speaking) gear will give you faster off the line but lack some top end. A 4.10 gear in your car would be a crazy fun street gear but would take some top mph off. Idk exact numbers on what it would cut but lets say it would cut it down 20 mph or something like that. But it would get you there ALOT faster.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Here is just about everything you can buy to really **** off the wife lol
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/v6/386343-after-market-parts-60-a.html
Look through that and the headers part # is listed. Ceramic is better due to the heat but they cost alot more. Either way you need to get a heated o2 sensor if you get headers cause alot of ppl found out you will have problems with the stock sensor.
And the stuff he listed is to tune the computer. You will need to get a cable and a way to burn chips or get a ostrich (NOT THE BIRD) module and download tuner pro rt. Its free(well the program is not the cable and form of burning the chip). You can then tune the computer to get the most out of your car. It takes alot of time to tune a car the right way. There is not plug in and push some buttons to get hp tho. Well tech that is what your doing but its not like the diesel tuners you can buy. You have to do driving logs and everything and figure out what to change and all that. Its the "underground tuning" lol.
I cant help you with the tuning yet as my car WONT connect to my laptop so i cant tune anything. ERRR wont go there tho.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
I wouldn't really recommend the 4.10s. I ran them for a while with a motor built to turn some rpms and it wouldn't pull for anything on top end. I went back to 3.73s and it does better in the 1/4 mile now. Its not bad on the interstate now. I'm considering going to a 3.42 gear, though. I do have an auto tranny which came with 3.23 gear in the rear, stock.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Ostrich? Gack! Why add more cables for real time tuning when you can get an NVSRAM module from moates. That way you can do real time tuning through the aldl like obd2 pcm's. That's part of the reason I'm trying to get a '730ecm w/ SAUJPV4 tuned for my car. Go to the DIY PROM section and start reading through the stickies at the top and you'll find all the info you could ever need (and then some). You can get headers through pacesetter, but S-10 headers will work too with a little modification.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Okay so after doing my HW and opening up my gears. I currently have a 3.42 gearing in the rear. SO I was thinking about maybe a 3.90 gear increase which would boost my torque 14% from the stock 180ft/lb of torque to 205.2ft/lb of torque while saving me some top end and. What do you think?

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
unfortunately, there's no 3.90 gear available for the 7.5" 10 bolt rear end. I've wished for it, too. Keep in mind that it won't effect how much tq or hp your making. It will apply it to the tires in a slightly different manner, though.
Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Just drop in a 350 and get some real power
Ok just kidding, i spent 50 bucks on a tuneup today and my wife was mad at me, so consider yourself lucky that she didn't kill you, or did she? Haven't heard from you since earlier today...

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
Ouuuu 3.90 would be a great gear for our cars. Id love to get one of those.
Either way haha micherneaf a 350 swap would make better power. If someone has a 350 that runs that they wanna give me for free then sure ill do the swap and mod the f*** out of it. But until then im going to play with the 3.1 and boost that, long term goal for the car is to boost a ls1 or do a nasty n/a ls3 build. Seeing as I bearly have the funding for a decently boosted 3.1l the ls1 or ls3 goal is for when I make more money lol.

Re: What is the BEST GEARING FOR A 91 FIREBIRD
lol i would but it wont bolt up to my t-5. I am currently looking at a 5.3L L7 motor out of a silverado. Oh believe me she wanted to kill me. Kept ranting about my life insurance policy, lol. As for the 3.90 gear, my buddy is fabricating one based on the measurements he took today with a water jet cutting machine. Made a few rough test fabs and they looked really good so we will see if I get lucky.

LOL Patience my friend I am working on it. The $250 was for the gears and the labor of him putting it in. I dont think he would charge that much just for the gears. Stupid memory card from my phone isnt cooperating with my computer
so I am going to CVS today to have them burned to a CD that I can transfer to my computer.

There are other things to think about then motor and gearing.
Try shedding some weight off of the car.

3:73's FTW!!! ...or since you can pull a few extra r's then most 8's can through some 4:11's in there... Difference would be night and day...
EDIT: I gotta start looking at the dates of these posts!!! haha... Bryanlz - You can find a decent set on ebay for half of what you would pay retail... Thats where I got my 3:73's for $69 shipped!!
