EGR removal?
i've done so many **** home-cooked little mods to my little 2.8 that i think 1 more can't hurt. would i benefit from removing my egr valve or even just disabling it? i read in the tech section that 1 guy thinks it could even HURT performance as the exhaust gas cools the combustion chambers. any ideas?

Re: EGR removal?
see this is the problem. i've read two articles that say it could increase gas mileage...one that said nothing of it...and now i'm being told it would decrease gas mileage. i could gain performance do to no exhaust in my intake air...lose it do to hot combustion chambers and timing issues...eat gas due to god knows what...or save gas due to more dense air. interesting question...i would say.

Well it's funny all i know is the time my egr valve stop work i got 150 miles to the tank Vs the 320 i use to get. personally i would love to kick it to the curb them things cost 247 for an off brand and almost 340 form GM

Re: EGR removal?
If you lost that much fuel economy, youve got something else going on there dude, lol. Disabling/removing EGR will only affect your MPG by 1-2MPG. I pulled mine and made block off plates, didnt even notice a difference at the pump. The amount of space it takes up in the combustion chamber is not that much, do you think your car would run that well if it had a ton of exhaust pumped into the cylinder? Performance, not really a difference either, i just did it because it gets in the way and i didnt wanna keep paying for it when it goes bad. It is true that it will cool your combustion chamber, thats why its on cars to begin with. It cools the temp to lower NOx.

Re: EGR removal?
Ok question about the EGR and the pipe that goes to the throttle body. First of all I have a v6 3.1 Camaro. No I was working on my throttle body, I put everthing apart and cleaned it up with also put new IAC and a new TPS.
Now hopefully you guys know what I'm trying to explain. Before you connect the valve or pipe from the egr and the throttle body....theres a gasket in between the bolts and the tb before putting it back. Some freaking idiot told me that he made the hole bigger, the hole in the middle of the gasket...would that mess things up?
And How do you know when the EGR is bad or sticking? Besides getting a bad code...lets be rear, our cars dont tell us when something is crapped out...
Thanks for anyone that replys....by the way I can take pictures of what I'm trying to explain if that helps.....
Thanks people

Re: EGR removal?
what your describing is called porting and it will make the exhaust gasses flow into the intake a little better...if it does at all. i wouldnt do it because that just means you get even more exhaust gasses into your chambers...the amount its at right now is there for a reason..more could hurt performance i believe. i dont know.

Re: EGR removal?
1. I used to have an EGR tube gasket that didn't have the restrictor plate in it. Never noticed any difference.
2. EGR flows around 7% of the exhaust back into the engine. This results in lower combustion temps, lower NOx emissions, less fuel consumption (slightly). About the only gain you will get out of removing it is that you won't have to clean the intake and injectors as often due to not being carbon fouled.
Oh, and Camrs89, I have a spare tube you could have if you want it. PM me.

Re: EGR removal?
Drewman thank you very much for the info....
I wouldnt have done it either but the problem is that someone already did it so I'm pretty ticked about it. But now to find out if I should leave it or replace that gasket...
Thanks and sorry to take over on this post....
P.S. Last request can someone post on here or try to put a picture of EGR sticking or bad? Thanks peoples....

Re: EGR removal?
That would be tough to do with you having a digital EGR. The 3 screws holding the pieces together will break about 80% of the time when you try to take it apart to illustrate. However, what you might be able to do is to remove the 2 bolts from the base (hex heads, not the Torx heads), remove the valve, and look up into the bottom to see if the pintles are seated against the base plate. You should be able to push them all up into the valve (manually opening them) to see if they stick.

Re: EGR removal?
no its cool feel free it's my post lol. the diaphram egrs are really easy. i don't know if that would hurt performance or not because from the information i can gather from this thread the egr doesnt put that much exhaust gas in in the first place. i dont know. you could try to temporaroly disable the egr and drive for like 20 minutes and see if you notice a difference at all.

Re: EGR removal?
thank you for reminding me to tear down my throttle bottle/intake and clean it, i notice more performance just from cleaning it and adjusting it every now and again

Re: EGR removal?
Ha!
I remember when I cleaned out the intake on my V6 years ago and thinking it was really bad. Little did I know it was going to be nothing compared to what was in my 6.2L diesel with its EGR. Sluge Build up was nearly 1/4 inch thick in some places. Removing the gunk, clearing the hard packed soot from around the valves and lightly porting the heads from my diesel will be like upgrading an all cast iron V6 to a hybrid.
EGR: short term MPG boost and emissions reduction with long term over all preformance reduction.
