V6 flywheel question

Hi all, i read here frequently but rarely post. That said i did some searching and could not find an answer to my question. I am wondering what years are interchangeable for flywheels. I've read that there is a change over year where they switch to an internally balanced motor and i am wondering what that year is. My flywheel for my 89 v6 is warped and i'm getting ready to go to the junkyard to hunt for another. Thanks in advance.

Re: V6 flywheel question

I believe 88+ would work for you as the changeover year was 87. But, if you get either an 88 or 89, check your existing wheel for the damper weight on the engine side. No weight means you need to get a wheel without a weight. Also check the replacement to make sure it's the same. You don't want a mismatch as you'll end up replacing the crank and line boring the block after you decide that the vibes are too much to handle.

I just picked up an 83 Berlineta with a 2.8 with auto trans. Would it have a weighted or unweighted flywheel on it?

It has some vibrations to it. After searching on here I also found a trans fix for a vibration as well, but it's not the original trans. It has a button I have to push to get it to go into o.d. so I am guessing it's from a much newer car and it might have the wrong flywheel on it.

Cars with manual transmissions have flywheels, automatics have flex plates.

Yes, that is true. But is there a diff in these? I know it has a newer model trans in it and I think it may have a newer model plate in it causing a vibration. I need to track this vibe down before something breaks on it.

Re: V6 flywheel question

the flexplate could have been changed, too. do you know for a fact that its the original engine? if so, it should be externally balanced. which also means that it is possible that a weight came off of the flex plate causing the same problem.

As far as I know the engine is original and only the trans has been changed. According to the guy I bought it from, the owner before him changed the trans out and he thinks the wrong plate was installed on it. I know both of the owners, but I can only question the one I bought it from.

Now that I know it should have a weight on it, I'll check it out as soon as possible. And repair if needed. Thanks AM91.

Re: V6 flywheel question

One more question, can I get a weight somewhere and weld it in place? There's plenty of room to get to the back of the plate and weld one in place. Would be a lot easier than pulling the tranny and replacing the entire plate.

Re: V6 flywheel question

being that mine is a 91 and internally balanced, I haven't dealt with this subject alot so I can't say anything about what the weight weighs or if its specific to each engine (I kind of doubt that). hopefully somebody else has more experience with that and will chime in.

Thanks. I was not sure if you can get just a weight. I know I have seen them for race converters and such, and that was what got me to thinking about doing it this way instead of taking it all apart.

You may be able to weld a weight to it but I think it would be extremely hard to balance it with the flexplate still on the car. The balance needs to be pretty precise to reduce vibrations.
