Re: Screaching noise
That would be an engine gnome trying to eat your serpentine belt. You caught him in the middle of a meal and hurt him. Now you're doomed to engine trouble.

Re: Screaching noise
"serpentine belt" It's in there, just disguised a smidge, its either the belt/s or a bearing on one of your accessories.

oh and i think one of those engine gnomes ate one of my fusible links, and my fan relay switch harness wire

Re: Screaching noise
You replace the belt/s because its probably not been done as recently as it should have been done because people hate their cars and don't maintain them, but if you're tight on cash, pull the belt/s off, and turn your alternator pulley by hand, and your ac compressor by hand, and your tensioner(if you have a serpentine setup) and water pump pullies, if you hear metal grinding or other unpleasant noises it could be one of these accessories, and if a new belt doesn't fix it, then it IS an accessory and or accessory bearing.

Re: Screaching noise
Wet the belt before you start it and see if it goes away. Or take the belt off & start.

Re: Screaching noise
taking it off wouldn't narrow it down...none of the accessories would be rotating, and I don't see it being the rotating assembly or crank pulley...

Re: Screaching noise
Could it be possible that when I put the underdirve pullies on I put a belt that is to tight ? I mean it was screaching a little but it got worse . And yes when I got this spray that supposed to get rid of the noise but it only does when I start the car nd spray it , then like twenty mins later it starts again nd doesn't go away unless sprayed again

Re: Screaching noise
Take the belt off and see if it stops. That spray goo doesn't do what it's supposed to throw it away. Just makes a mess.

Re: Screaching noise
Is it serpentine or multiple V-belts, and whens the last time the belt was replaced? And if serpentine does it use a tensioner?
But from what you just said, if I understand correctly you have a spray type stuff that is supposed to eliminate the noise, and does temporarily but then comes back, if thats so, you need a new belt.

Re: Screaching noise
That won't accomplish anything....if he removes the belt/s, the only thing that will be rotating is the crank pulley, yeah it will stop the noise, but it won't narrow down the problem any and he certainly can't drive around without belt/s on.....really not sure why you're suggesting he remove it...

Re: Screaching noise
99% of the time when a car comes into my shop with an obnoxious squeal it's an ancient belt with too little tension or some liquid on it that shouldn't be. Start with the basics and progress.

its serpentine system and yes it does use a tensioner nd the belt was changed a year ago I can't see it going bad that fast

Re: Screaching noise
With the belt off spin the pulleys. Feel it out. Smooth? How much axial play do your idler/tensioner pulleys have?

Re: Screaching noise
Barely any. A trashed bearing should be obvious. If not spray it with wd40 or oil it and see if that keeps the noise at bay 'till it dries up again. Then you have your awnser.

Re: Screaching noise
I actually had this problem today, I heard a piercing screeching while driving, I have a v8 and i can barely here anything but my engine so i new i had to stop and check it out. when stopped i removed my air intake, turned the belt tensioner with a ratchet releasing the tension on the belt, took belt off the pullys, I noticed the small pulley attached to the belt tensioner was chromed by the rotation of the belt, I loosened the bolt on this pulley then rebolted it way tighter than before. It might have been loose because the noise stopped right away, its ironic because i just ordered a new tensioner today that should be in by 6pm at autozone. i ordered this after noticing the last couple days that my belt tensioner shakes alot ONLY when the AC is on. Today before the noise began i was driving with the AC on for about 2 hours, longer than most days. Maybe the belt tensioner shook so much it loosened its pully. regardless im replacing the whole tensioner as soon as i pick it up. hope this helps.

Re: Screaching noise
That would be your smog pump. Not uncommon for them to start making noise at this age. I've seen a few so worn they sieze. If emissions isn't a concern you can remove it and use a smaller belt. Look up the routing for a car without air injection.

Re: Screaching noise
Here's a quote from another site I thought was amusing.
A "smog pump" is a clever device that transfers available horsepower and converts it into a high pitched squealing sound. It also has the uncanny ability to soak up drops of power steering fluid and use them to self-destruct.

Re: Screaching noise
haha i needed that this morning i laughed pretty good, your right though, check belt, alternator(when bearings go bad in those they make all kinds of noise) and smog pump, youll find the answer and maybe even gain some horspower and weight reduction if its the smog pump

Re: Screaching noise
I think I'll make the pic bigger. That way you can see all the dust on it.
You just unbolt the pump and plug the hole on the catcon. It will run just fine.

Re: Screaching noise
Catalytic converter, it has a bung on it for the smog pump, needs to be plugged with metal. From what he said, I think remove the whole pump, pulley and all? I know nothing about smog pumps, but thats what it sounds like he meant.

Re: Screaching noise
You can just unbolt it and the bracket from the motor. Use a belt for an earler car without air injection. Double check routing because its probably different.

Google, of course. Autozone's website has a free auto info application too.
