2.8 to 3.1
OK guys you helped me once on this,but my info got misplaced.It's been a good while and I cant find it.I'm trading a 82ta for a 3.1.I will be putting it into an 86 firebird that had the 2.8 mpif.the dummys cut the manifolds off when they pulled the motor and threw the fuel rails and ifectors into a pan that got rain and trash in it.the 3.1 i'm trading for will have manifolds compleat motor with intake sensers wiring harness and computer,can i just change out the computer wiring harness and install the motor with its own manifolds and all gauges work inside,what about the fan operation? would I have to do somthing there?I'm trying to help my girl and soninlaw get a way around,but not much cash to spend.Alot of the 2.8 stuff is missing.

to answer a few questions, you pretty much just have to switch the harness and computer and bolt in the 3.1. you will also need the map sensor for a 3.1(as your 2.8 uses a MAF)

I got lost....
Are you removing a 2.8L and putting a 3.1 in it's place?
Are you using the 2.8L electronics or the 3.1L electronics?
What does any trade have to do with this?

I'm sorry.I'll try again. I have an 1986 firebird that had a 2.8 mpfi.It was taken out before I bought the car.A pile of pieces.No heads!And the e.manifolds had been cut off.I've got a trade set up for a 3.1 motor compleat with harness,computer,and e.manifolds.my ? is,can I take out the 2.8 computer and install the 3.1 with the motor and wiring harness with no hang ups?OH yes,I have to replace the radiator any how the old one is no good.Aim I making this harder than it is?

Ok, I think I understand now.
Yes, you can swap in all the 3.1 bits and pieces, including the electronics. I would prefer the 3.1 electronics anyway, since it's a Speed Density set-up instead of the MAF set-up.

OK,got the 3.1 here finaly,you guys think there are some real dumb people out there,I'm fixing to prove you right!Be on your toes because I will be needing alot of help,OH yes,I have learn how to get pics up on my sight.wish me luck!!!

fyi, you could easily swap in the 3.1 and use the 2.8 wiring harness and ECM...hell I'm running a 3.4 off the stock harness and ecm....for the moment anyway...I have some mods so I need to get an ECM I can tune...

lets get this straight,you say I can just drop in the 3.1,hook up the wires that are in the car now and the computer will work just fine with no changes to the sensers and stuff like that?Sounds to good to be true,anyone else on this coment?

what is the BCM and what dose it do,where is it found,where do the wires run?

3.1 have vats 89-92 Your 2.8 does not. The 3.1 computer wont work becuase it wont get a signal from the vats box telling it to fire the injectors etc. Unless you have that tuned out of the 3.1 computer.
2.8 computer with wiring etc will work just need to use the 3.1 injectors on your 2.8 fuel injectors rails etc

OK,took it back out,removed the map stuff,put the maf stuff on,got it ready to put in the bird.waisted alot of time trying to keep the map stuff on.But I did learn alot about what to watch for in my trade deals and buying parts.let u know how the first try gose on trying to start it.NOTE,I said first try.

Got the motor in and power to it.bumped it to see if it would move.IT DID.Found out the sound in the back that run as soon as I would conect the battery cables up wasn't the fuel pump but the hatch pull down motor. There is a fitting in the front on the intake manifold that has to be switched over when using the 3.1 intake with the 2.8 maf system.I have gone with air conditioning deleat on the 3.1 block by going to the shorter belt as suggested.The belts are touching over one of the pulleys.I'm in hopes that when the motor is running there will be enuff pressure on the tenchen pulley to give clearance.that pulley is new. still have alot to do.Will post back with progress
