Dont know if anything is wrong?

On my way home from school today, I looked down at my oil guage and it showed it at 80 just like it always is. Then I let of the gas and the oil dipped down to 40! Everytime I would give it gas it would go up to 80, but once i let off, it would go right back to 40. I dont know if this has anything to do with it, but I also heard a thump every once and a while, like i was dragging or hitting something, when I got home I checked if anything was hanging and there wasnt! Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong?

Nothing is wrong. When you let off the throttle the rpms drop.
when this happens your oil pump slows down.Which lowers your oil pressure.

The only time mine reads 80 is when the engine is fairly cold. Kevin is right though...it fluctuates considerably with RPM, especially when the engine is warm.

Hehe, my oil pressure gauge never gets that high. I hope it has something to do with air being in the gauge's supply tubing (it's a mechanical gauge)! Plus I have it stupidly in the wrong spot.. it's not where the oil pressure sensor should be, but instead, where the fuel pump safety switch should be. Oops. I'll fix that next spring.

whoooooo.... That definitly relieves me! Oh and today the pressure was 60(it was warmer outside), so I guess it only reads almost 80 when it is cold!

Yeah Garmer,as the oil gets warm it thins out some. When my RS is at normal temp it reads 40lbs of oil pressure like when you stop for a red light(thats is "if"you do )the rpms drop down.

Depending on how warm it is outside, mine will be anywhere from 25-40 at a stoplight. I read a rebuild manual on 2.8s about this because I was concerned how low it was at idle, but down as low as 25 at 750RPM when fully warm is fine. Under a normal cruise once warm, I'm around 40.

One thing that's really cool?? When I floor it through 1st gear, it will go past 80PSI! I don't know if that is good, bad or a fluke, but it does it!

Just a thought how come our 88 Chevy C20 van doesnt (350)?

At a stop mine drops just below 40, and on the go it is between 60-80.
