Engine mod question.

For quite a while I have been wanting to order a cam for my '91. My dad keeps on telling me that a V6 can't handle that kind of stress and is at a high risk of blowing up. He tells me the displacement is too small for something like that. I've never heard of anybody blowing an engine because a higher performance cam. Has anybody ever had this happen or hear about it?

Go to http://www.geocities.com/overlift and go into the Engine section. There is a lot of information on the 2.8 V6 and cams for it there.

your dad just doesnt want you to get one because he thinks the car will be too fast or will be a pain to put in. You are at NO more risk of hurting your engine with a performance cam than you are with the stocker. Either your dad doesnt know what hes talking about or hes trying to talk you out of it because he thinks it will be a headache

Thanks for clearing that up for me. My dad is a certified mechanic, so he does know what he's talking about. I guess he thinks it'll be too fast.

Mine is too. that still doesnt mean he knows everything, Mechanics are experts on STOCK vehicles mainly.........there are exceptions obviously, my dad holds a strong belief that if it was meant to be that way, then the factory would have made it that way. We all know this isnt the way things go, do your own research on the topic, my paps calls me for help sometimes now.....not always the other way around------always Question.

If you put in a higher degree cam you have to do more mods, like stronger valvesprings etc. it depends on the cam. I know what I am talking about because I have blown a few parts of my engine when I just changed the cam.

putting in a cam is a fairly large job, especially for a novice.. if you do a basic upper rebuild (new lifters, valve springs, even new pushrods maybe) you should be fine.. you dad prolly just dont want the hassle of doing all that work.. kinda sounds like the way my dad acted when i had my first car and i started modding things (tweaking wastegates, hi flow air filters, ignition enhancers, etc) heheh its just a fatherly urge i think..

If ya do the cam then ya need to also add a new timming chain and new roller rockers and valve springs if ya want to do it right... Start small... Dynoamx cat back, K&N's, Catco High Flow Converter, Msd Coil, MSD Wires, MSD 6A Ignition box, pulleys, and then Cam, ect.....

Yeah, my dad is one of those types who thinks engines weren't made to modified, unless they're a V8. I have a 2.25" straight pipe into a Flowmaster 40 series and K&N filter. So I should go with a performance ignition next?
