Any ideas if I'll notice a difference?

Any ideas if I'll notice a difference?

I'm going to Auto Zone to order the Accel direct replacement coil in about an hour. Will I notice a difference or not?

BTW, for those of you wondering why I'm not going through Summit Summit wants $40 + 6 for handling, and Auto Zone wants $52 period. For $6 plus tax, its sooo much easier to buy from Auto Zone, plus these guys have given me a lot of tech advice over the years. Not to mention, if I need to bring it back, WAY EASIER than Summit or Jegs.

It ain't going in until Friday when I do an oil change, so until then I'll wonder how the hell much of a difference it'll make!! Any opinions??

I got the Accel direct replacement...I would assume this would be the same coil (in terms of output)?

When I "just" had a coil, I had the same coil Scoob's talking about. I think it's #140008.

Between switching from Accel to stock to Accel again (testing), I noticed with the Accel I had more power in higher RPM ranges. The motor also revved a bit higher before the auto tranny shifted.

I was wondering why you didn't go through Summit

yup yup, thats my coil.. i got it mounted up on the pass side strut tower, never had the time to pull the old coil out, which is shot.. two years ago, driving in the rain i hit a massive puddle, got the coil wet, cracked the case.. replaced it with this, been running on it ever since.. heh

Just out of curiosity Tom and scoob, why didn't you go with the direct replacement? That's why I was asking about if the direct replacment one had the same specs...I figured the one you guys have (or had in Tom's case) is better than the direct replacement? If it isn't, why did you go with it?

Thanks again guys!

There were no direct replacement coils (MSD or Accel) back when I first got a coil.

I didn't get a direct replacement coil this next time around because I liked the idea of having my spare still in the car.. mine hasn't suffered the same fate that scoob's did. I stalled out on the side of a road once; I plugged the original coil back in, and got home. Turned out I had a bad crimp connector on the harness to the Accel coil I had. Plus, now, I can do the same thing- I can bypass the MSD box & Coil to "eliminate" them in case I have car trouble.

Makes sense guys, thanks for the input. I had a feeling Tom that was why you didn't get the DR one. I was just wondering if one was "better" than another.

I just got it tonight...haven't put it on the car yet though. This coil will work with the 300+ box when I get it, right?

I don't see why not, hell, the MSD 6AL box can work with the stock GM coil! Plus the fact that Accel sells the box without a coil tells me that you can choose anything you want.

That was my thinking too. I didn't know a 6A box would work with a stock coil though!

I called Summit, and they want $175 for just the box, versus $200 for the box and coil. So yeah, I'll pay a little more overall, but I can't swing the $200 right now. I go tuition due in January!!

One last thing Tom...I'm sure you're getting sick of all these questions by now, sorry. Anyway, I had asked back awhile ago if Accel made 2 different grades of coil. Do they? Is the "kit" 300+ coil any different than the one I just got?

If you can let me know, thanks. If you don't or are sick of my questions, let me know and I'll shut my a*s up

Hey it's no bother! They list the specs a little differently for the two coils. I'm going by the coil listed as part of the 300+ kit #49320, which is a "Universal Kit, w/Supercoil #140019".

Supercoil #140019:

primary resistance= 0.2 ohm
secondary resistance= 3.6 k ohm
turns ratio= 95:1
max voltage= 48,000 volts
peak current= 300 mA
spark duration= 360 microseconds

Supercoil #140011 (GM replacement)

primary resistance= 0.3 ohm
secondary resistance= 8.8 k ohm
turns ratio= 134:1
max voltage= 48,000 volts
"Peak Increase in Energy (current) over OE"= 36%
"Peak Increase in Voltage over OE"= 27%

I'm not sure how those last two for #140011 relate to the specs for the first coil... maybe the guys at Accel can tell you. Oh but yeah I noticed in the PDF catalog file that the #140011 can also work with the Accel/MSD/etc boxes.

Thanks so much Tom!! What you posted was exactly what I was looking for...max voltage and all that.

Well, when I do my oil tomorrow night I'll throw it on...it'll be interesting to see what the difference is!!
