No Power

I recently put in a new alternator, the car will not start without a boost, and when I boost it the battery does not hold a charge. While running after the boost, the car idles at 35 when it normally idles at 5-15. When I put my foot on the gas prior to trying to start, I turn the key and get a low choking sound. What can I do to fix this?

Put a voltmeter on the battery before you start the car. It should be around 12 volts.

Put a voltmeter on the battery after you start the car. If the alternator's charging, you should get 13.8 (14) volts.

Are the battery terminals clean & tight?

I going to try and clean the terminals first thing in the morning... It was cold here in Brooklyn last week, could there have been a condensation build up in the tanks, and if so would a container of dry gas help with the possible water build up??

It might, in fact I'm leaning towards moisture in the gas as what caused me to break at the racetrack:

However what gets me is that you need to get a jumpstart to start the car... maybe give that battery a full charge after removing it from the car?

OH- Hey, wait a sec- when you changed the alterantor (and disconnected the battery), you also reset the computer! Driveability will be crap for a while until the computer re-learns itself. Try your dry gas (**make sure it's okay for fuel injected engines!), charge the battery up again, start the car, and go for a 1/2 hour ride away from your house at highway speeds. That way it'll take you a 1/2 hour to come back.. after an hour, the computer should have re-learned your car.

Bad alternator?

Get a voltage meter. Voltage with the car off should be about 12. Voltage with the car running should be 13.8, or 14.
