Question about Torque Converters Part 2
Question about Torque Converters Part 2
Ok so i am unsure about what kind of converter goes into my 1991 3.1L firebird. I do know picking a converter is kinda like entering a haunted house <------ never know what to expect and scary as hell cuz it makes or breaks the engine. So all that said.... What converter goes into the car, What was the STOCK stall speed?
Now the Question....
Say you had an engine that looks like the one below and answer what stall speed you would go for....
3.1L 1mm bored over
Forged Pistons 9.3:1 Compression
Hardened Crank
Ported/Polished Heads with 1.6 rockers
Gasket matched Intake
"massaged" TB
Headers <----- what a headache, not yet but hopeful.
Cam... Specs-----
At .050 ---------- 214/224 int/exh
Advertised ------- 280/290 int/exh
Gross lift ------ .443/.465 int/exh
Lobe sep --------- 112
Hyd cam
Produces a fair idle with slight lope
Excellant midrange 2000 to 4800
Excellant mid to top torque 2500 to 4000
Direct air off the ram air hood
Pullies
Custom chip tuned w/ car on dyno
3.73:1 gears
Tranny rebult, Racing shift kit
SLP Drive shaft
90 shot NOS
MSD 6AL
Racing Distributor
8.8 wires
Platinum plugs
Can't forget the chrome and anodized metal.... thats worth 20HP... and about 500.00 in cost to find OR have had done.
The builder stated 225hp to 235hp with torque in the 235 to 250 foot pound area, BEFORE NOS. Would redline at 6000 to 6500.
The spec on the cam state 2500 to 4000 for the power band... so a 2500 rpm stall?

You'd want the torque convertor come in at the beginning of the power band so 2500 is about right. Look on your old one to see what staff it is. There are all required to have this printer on them. My TTA stock had 2025 and then I upgraded to 2500 and now I have 3600 9-inch.

Methinks braindamage needs to lay off a bit.. but he's right.. 225 sounds a little unrealistic these engines aren't the biggest things around.. TTAs are 3.8l V6s and produce about 250 turbocharged.. 225 before juice isn't going to be that easy.

225hp unrealistic? is it? hermmmmm..... 191 CID times 1.2 HP per CID = what? I am not taking this as a flame, maybe its a V8's nightmare that a V6 could make equal HP then a stock 305 out of the same year? Fiero guys are making 200 to 235hp out on there N/A engines, 2.8's and 3.1L's. Z24 guys are making it out of their 3.1L's and theres a car running around here in the dallas area with a 3.1L thats pulling 300 to 400 hp out of a 3.1L. Course he is turbo charged. Why would 225 to 235hp be so unrealistic? heheheh well if it is, i guess i have waisted abunch of money, but know what?? it was FUN!
heheheh

Stall is also affected somewhat by the power of the motor. Using arbitrary (meaningless example) numbers, a convertor that stalls at 2800 RPM behind a stock/mild V8 might stall at 3500 RPM behind a high-HP v8.
I think our cars came with a 1600 or 1800 rpm convertor. There should be a four digit number (or decal) somewhere on the torque convertor. The second digit is the "k-factor", which is how GM "rates" their torque convertors. I got this info on the second digit from Vader a while ago:
K = K-85, 1,211 RPM
G = K-100, 1,397 RPM
F = K-110, 1,611 RPM
E = K-115, 1,654 RPM
B = K-140, 2,025 RPM
I'll have to check mine out when it gets warm again.

Tom, i would love to hear what you have to say about a 225hp to 235hp N/A 3.1L. Not sure if you have a engine building program but, what do you think with the build sheet in my first post? Im really not trying to defend the engine. Heck for the money i have spent..... If it runs, i will be happy, if it dyno's more then 140hp after they tune the chip with the car on a chassis dyno, i will be happy... anyways what ya think?

Well, as a personal rule, I don't guess HP. You'll have to let us know what the motor dyno's at! What camshaft is that? None of the ones I have info on are that extreme. Are you going with a carbuerated setup or keeping the fuel injection? I don't know of a "racing distributor" (those Mallory units you told me about included) that works with any 2.8/3.1 computer.

The cam is from PAW, i will post the part # when i get home. Yep it will be MPFI and not carbed. From what i have been told by Mallory, this distrubutor will work in the 3.1L MPFI, it better, i payed 259.99 for the application directly from them. The engine should be pretty streetable with good response in the midrange area where my car lacks power. I will be taking the car once the engine is in, to chassis dyno it, thats how they tune the custom chip. Not bad for 315.00, I will have #'s then. I am sure it will put out pretty decently. My fiancee is about ready to wring my neck if i keep this up much longer, heheh i haven't even begun the handling..... yet.... If i can get it into the low low 14's on funny fumes i will have met what i wanted to do. If not, it will go there before i sell it heheheh.

The cam is by PAW? I didn't think those were computer-compatible! Wow! You'll definately have to let us know about the cam, and how the guy hooks the distributor up. I honestly don't know how it would be done with the computer (as if you couldn't tell)

I pick the block up this weekend, its all done. Yep the cam is computer friendly. Heck the guy here with the turbo z24, his cam makes mine look like a wimp stick. His is running over 500 in lift, on a computer 3.1L FWD. I got the heads back last week. There done and ready to go. We move in 3 weeks and i am still waiting for parts that were chromed or anodized to come back. I need to get the rear tires done and the SLP drive shaft. I would be smart to do posi, lift bars, frame connectors, front end bushing kit, front/rear stabilizers, engine cross brace. After that the car comes off the road, engine bay gets cleaned, and painted, all wires get put into black and blue split tubes. Engine goes in, everything will be either black, aluminum, chrome, blue or anodized blue. Car will be painted black that fades into a true blue near the bottom. Staying with 15" Rims ----- Cragar SS, or some old style centerlines. Tires will be 265/50SR/15's will be 2% under what the stock 215/65/15's are, the fronts will be 245/60SR/15's. Still aways away tho....... But should look killer for the money and time
Just got a custom hood pod for 1.5" gauge made last month.... NOS and fuel pressure sitting in the holes now
anyways keep an eye on the signature, will start coming together soon.
