86-88 Rough price estimates?

I am looking for my first (not my last) Camaro to purchase...I am going to go with a six, so If I wreck it, I wont feel as bad, and besides less expensive break downs.

Can you give me a price estimate for 86-88, in poor-fair condition. (take into consideration needs inspection, tires, brakes, exhaustm things like that the need to be fix, for poor; needs body work, but everything else is mechanically sound, for a fair conditioned car)

Thanx,

ps, could you tell me some of the prices you guys paid for your cars...

Well, I would think that you could get a 86-88 Camaro in fairly good condition for under 2 grand. $2,500 at the most. I got mine from a friend who had just bought a '98 (which I have been plotting to "borrow" from him for a while now ), for $1700 (actualy he wanted 2 grand, but all I could get was $1700).... Not bad, considering it had new exhaust, custom 5-spoke wheels, and brand new BFG's... It was blue-booked at $3500. Just an example of the deals that are out there...

I bought my 1985 Camaro SC for $450!!!! It has original 43k on it! The engine is mint! 2.8L 5 Speed! Interior mint! All the car needed was a bit of body work, surface rust and it had a cracked windshield! Now the car has 91 RS Ground Effects, IROC hood and 88-90 rims! Car is absolutely mint! Brand new 86 Bright Red with Orange Mica paint job! Its sweet! Just keep lookin man, you will find a 2.8 for alot cheaper than 2500!

'86 SC for a flat grand here.. needed paint (wasn't the end of the world, but it was oxidizing), needed exhaust immediatly.. had it die once (coil went due to old cap/rotor.. my bad) at about 135k miles... has 154k now, tranny's going, intermittent oil in cyls.. but it's still running.. and 20k miles for a grand isn't bad.. especially when some deep researching will get you a 383 and tranny for under 500..

Lets remember that this guy is Canadian, so we'l have to add a bit on the prices here!

I paid $3100 for a 1988 2.8 Firebird 5 spd fully loaded with 150,000 km (9XXXX miles) on it.

Back in '99 I bought my 86 SC for $1700 w/ 112k miles. All it needed was the right rear quarter painted and a good cleaning up. The interior is in perfect shape, just needed cleaning when I got the car. Almost 2 years later and 23k miles I've had a few problems most seriously the transmission, which was partially my fault since I gave it hell but you learn from things like that. I've had to put around $2000 into it but looking back its still been worth it.

Thanx guys, for the advice and prices to compare with...
So far I looked at one car, 1986 Camaro 300,000km on it,
Problems
-need tires
-needed rear brakes
-needed muffler
-needed drivers door (would not open)
-Needed inspection
-needed battery
-Needed paint big time

But it had a new clutch, and a few sensors sensors,

What would you guys pay for this car???

The amount of roadway it's covered alone would make me weary.. if the engine hasn't been rebuilt, it might be coming to its time.. I've heard of them passing about 200k mi, but I don't hear it much.. rest seems to be pretty normal.. judging by the superficial needs and approximating the real needs, I wouldn't pay more than $500 canadian.. it unfortunatly sounds like it has true money pit potential. On the plus side, if you wrecked it it wouldn't be a very big loss at all. This is a personal opinion and does not neccessarily reflect the opinions of others in this forum.

I would not pay over 1200 for a car in that shape... If you need a new muffler get a dynomax cat back for 149.99 through JC Whitney you will be much happier...

Also any car you buy, toss in some new plugs, wires, cap and rotor and fuel filter and new O2 sensor... It is a nice thing to do the first day you own it...

$490
3.42 Posi Disc Brake Rear-end. Rear end alone was worth the $490
Body has no rust underneath, minor quarter panel damage. Engine runs fine with a 5 speed. All Ive put into it is gas and had an oil change. Saving for the 350 thats gonna go into the car and the paint job.

Total Expense Estimate $3500 for a like new car.

I'm also thinking a low price for that car in that shape... it'll take another $2000 (including paint) to get that in good shape- and you didn't even mention how "bad" the interior (seats/headliner/etc) are.

Around here, $2500-$3000 US gets you a "perfect" 2.8l car. I paid $2900 for mine with 65,000 miles on the clock.

Joe, i'm one of those guys who'd tell you that if you're not completely satisfied with the car now, or if you don't see full potential with it, than wait on it, rather than buy something that you won't be happy with in the next couple of weeks, months, or years. Wait around and get something which you truely want, not just the first car that pops up.

Trust me...I am not jumping at this car...I am just checking out what you guys have to say, from the sounds of it your all younger teens and early 20's, so I fit in at 17(18 in a week)

I really got excited about buying the first car I came to...but I decided I can find better. Besides the car was in a snowbank about 40cm deep, RULE #1 never buy a car in a snowbank
Thanx for your help guys, as soon as I find my car...I will post pics of no matter what the shape may be.

Joe

Well, I'm 24, if that matters. Personally, the bodywork and interior work are things that I hate most to do to a car. (I've done major bodywork to my car; Maaco handled the paint job.) If that was myself, I'd probably keep it in mind as a parts car, and look for something else. I'd rather swap a trans (done that too) than do any more bodywork- ugh.

I paid 3300 for my 91 firebird. Has T-tops and the ground effects, and had 102k when bought, 109k now, i have had it for 13 months. Engine was/is clean, no leaks. T-tops don't leak except in a pressure wash bay. body is clean and straight, has a softball size dent in passenger door, interior is clean, driver seat had a small rip in seat and the door soda holders where alittle banged up. other then that it was/is a very clean car. Currently i need to replace the driver side headlight motor as it is weak and i have to pop the hood when i turn the lights on to lock it into place. Fix the horn ---- it never worked. The hi beam switch seems not to work, almost like it is broken... oh and replace the passenger window switch i broke when i installed the B&M shifter... But thats it. All in all it starts everyday, runs good and is a dream to drive. I have priced them here in the local area and there about 2200 to 4100 on average, V8 firebirds of the same year seem to be less, unless modified. Trade in on my car is 2069.00, as it sits.. resale is 4300.00 with the above fixed.
