The younger kids buy the V6s not only for insurance, but because they're cheaper to buy too! When was the last time anyone saw a DECENT V8 for 2-3 grand? For many people, that's what they can swing for a 1st car.
Plus, 6's are more plentiful, especially the older you go. I haven't seen a V8 SC for sale for awhile, but I've seen plenty of 2.8s on used car lots.
In a way though, it's good younger drivers grab the 6s. Lets face it, when you first start driving, you wanna have some fun
Its harder to get in trouble when you're playing with a little less power, especially when it's slippery out.
Now seeing as how I can FEEL the flames coming on, think about it. I'm not saying that you can't get in trouble with a V6, but what I am saying is that in terms of a 1st sports car, a 6 is a great car to have. It handles great, stops good, and in slippery weather is a lot easier to handle. Anyone who lives where there's a lot of rain and snow knows what I'm talking about.
Before you flame me, think about it
I have known too many people crack up V8 Mustangs and Fbodies because they were barreling down the road like a jerk, enjoying the power, and just flat did something stupid.

No its not because you cant find a cheap 3rd gen with a V8. Its because you cant find one that runs! Atleast no where around here. When I was looking at some 3rd gens that I wanted half of the doors acted like they would fall off with the slightist tug. The other half the hoods wouldnt close. I began to think I would never find a good condition 3rd gen. But time proved me wrong. And now I couldnt be happier...Well, maybe a 150 more HP would be nice. But all in all Im happy!

24 here... When I was younger (19-20) I had a 79 TA with a 403 6.6L, and, for a while, a 76 Formula with a bored-over Poncho 400 (406). I sold the Formula, and the TA later got stolen
However, I bought a V6 last year because I needed the economy. Speed is great fun, and the little sixer will surprise ya, too, but my priorities lie elsewhere now (wildlife photography as a career). I dunno, maybe it's a maturity thing, but I think it's just me. I'm really old as all hell

Jason E, why do you think I would flame you?
Believe it or not, I drive my car in snow (in the mountains to boot) and in rain. The trick is what you alluded too, you have to treat the throttle like a trigger of a gun. Because if you don't, it will kill you. But, that can happen even with a V6.
FYI, I usually find it to be FWD minivans and 4x4 SUVs that usually get into the most trouble on mountainous, snowy roads. For some reason, people think JUST because they have a 4x4, that they can drive at the same rate of speed as if the road is dry on a nice sunny day. I guess they forget about stopping and turning.
I do agree with the insurance factor. Where I live we have "socialized" auto insurance that rewards/penalizes you based on your driving record (accidents) not on your age. After a certain number of years of accident free driving, you receive the maximum discount of 45% of your insurance premium.
My insurance, for full coverage, C$100 comprehensive and C$200 (US$130) collision with C$1,000,000 3rd party only costs me US$540. For any 1st time driver (regardless of age) they would pay around US$1,000 for the same coverage and get a 10% discount for each year they don't have an accident (their fault) until they got the max.
Lastly, it wouldn't really matter if your car had a V6 or a 350 L98 here, it is the value (rate group) of the car that sets the insurance rate, not the engine.

well, my friend's father bought him a 1990 T/A with a 305TPI. bad part is that he paid 7500 bucks for it, then could only sell it for 5000, sad huh. I'm one of the lucky ones who got a 1 owner firebrd, t-tops,premium sound, overhead counsel, and deluxe interior, for my frist car, it'll be a collectors item one day.
oh and with the v6, i get full coverage for only 1200 bucks a year

Dude, that works out to just under US$1,100/year for insurance. What province are you in and what coverage do you have?
If you're in BC, you either JUST started driving or you got into an accident. If not, I would contact ICBC and review my rate.
My 1991 GTA is rated as Group 13 (they haven't changed it in about 4 years). You MUST be in lower rate group than me. I am in the highest rate group for all 3rd Gens based on its value. Initially, when I got my car it was in a lower rate group until ICBC realized there were Trans Ams and GTAs...so they created another rate group for GTAs in 1992 or 1993.

I'm 23.... I kinda figured that *most* V-6ers were under 30 LOL!
I Pay $1004CDN/YR. I've been driving for just 5 years and have had 1 accident (never went against insurance cost me $900 though) I also don't have Collision (Who needs it with parts cars so cheap) and save $19 for my Alarm

Glenn,
I have $3,000,000 3rd party liability, $200 collision, $100 comprehensive.
This summed up to $1549 + a $53 licence fee. I have a 30% discount. My basic coverage has me in rate class 003 and my collision and comprehensive have me in rate group 10.
The reason you get the cheaper insurance is because you luckily live outside of the lower mainland! We get to pay extra here!

Dude...when I lived on the coast (last year) I still paid just under C$1,000/year (licence fee included and business coverage). I do have the Road Star Gold rating. But I think you are still being burned a little as you should be in a lower rate group. Haven't had an accident in over 20 years.
Monkie, collision is the expensive part. Your 3rd party is generally manditory and relatively cheap to get higer payout. Fire and theft (by themself) are also cheap.
Remember that 1C$ = US$.65.. so you would be paying C$1,000 for basic coverage here.
