91-92 V6 Open Air vs. Cold Air Induction?
91-92 V6 Open Air vs. Cold Air Induction?
I have a '91 Camaro RS 3.1 and it has the round metal canister on the front passenger's side that contains the air filter. The canister has a snorkle (about 8-10" long) that reaches just bairly into the fender well.
What's the best mod?
(1) Remove the canister and re-attach the lid (and reconnect the removed air temp sensor) for an open element setup?
(2) Extend the snorkle a little bit so that the open end is located farther down into the fender and picks up colder air?
(3) Extend the snorkle far enough to connect to a custom made ram-air-type scoop? (Is water gonna be a problem with this?)
(4) Use a custom made ram-air-type scoop to direct air flow up to the location where the stock snorkle is picking up air (but not actually make a sealed connection)?
(5) Some other idea?
What have you guys tried that worked the best? What would be the problems with any of these? Rank best to worst?
Any help would be appreciated?

This is really strange, Because I just did this mod to my car. Well first I tryed putting in a K&N filter. It was good but I felt no difference. So then I drilled holes in the metal canaster. I could feel the difference but I thought I could do better. So I took out the box and put the sensor thing in the tubing to my filter. I can really feel the difference. Its alot smoother between gears, I guess cause it can breathe better and my car is louder, but the best of all is that it faster! By me just looking at the setup, it seems that the only problems I could have is leakage from the bottom of the filter, so this weekend im going to cut out a circle out of a rubber pad and clamp it in there under the filter to stop air leakage. And I would also worry about getting the filter wet, so i go slower through puddles.
If anyone knows of any problems with this setup...please tell me about it!

Go to the GM dealer you can get a dual snorkel intake 30 bucks new beter then the one that comes with the 3.1 thats what i put in my car i like it more then the cold air intake also soon ill do a ram air setup
FastRS, You're using a Camaro Z-28 type air intake that extends into the nose area, and picks up air from behind front bumper?

Pimp....I don't have a camera or a scanner...but i will try to explain it as well as possible.
I loosened the hose clamp on the air tubing thing at the top of the air box.
I undid the screw going throught the airbox, I disconnected the air temp sensor plug,
I took of the top of the box, took out the filter and took the sensor off the box with a wrench.
Then i put the K&N air filter directly on the little metal platform that usta hold up the air box.( I don't know the part # for the filter, but it was same size as the stock.)
Then i put the air box top on, screwed it down and reconnected the tubing.
I reconnected the sensor to the plug and taped it temporaly to the tubing.
This weekend im going to drill a hole in the tubing and put in the sensor there.
and i will make that rubber mat, to seal the area between the filer and the metal platform.
Hope that helps!

Jiffy, thanks for your input. Someone else on this board did it (basically) exactly the way you describe.
The thoughts that I have on this setup are:
(1) You're sucking in air that is still basically within the engine compartment which I assume would be warmer than outside air. (Although the location of our filter is far better than one sitting on top of a carb on top of an engine.)
(2) You've done nothing to gain any type of ram-air-effect.
Your solution is easy, free, and totally non-destructive so I'll probably do it ASAP because I believe it would be effective. However, is there a better setup?
Anyone else? Any more ideas?

Pimpride92, I beleive he is using a stock type, direct replacement air filter. He just upgraded to the K&N version (which is what I also have) instead of a standard paper filter.

Just a side note; a short length of 3" exhaust pipe could also "fill the gap", if an old MAF sensor can't be found...

When you take the air box off, where to you put the little wire that connected to the other air box.

i don't see how you could screw it up, but i did it, and i did see an increase in power, my car is much smother, and faster, sounds better also. i need to put that sensor like you did, i just ran it underneath the filter, inside the filter, it works perfect, no warning or anything, so far.

Make your own lower restrictive tubing and definately buy a K&N tapered (conical) air filter. Jiffy has on OEM direct replacement with an open bottom(defeats the whole purpose of having a filter at all) There are tons of setups posted everywhere...just find them. Or think a little- just remember...the less restrictive tubing and bends, the better & outside air is colder. Oh, and K&N's can alledgedly stand up to some moisture with no problems.
So you get the Dual snorkel intake and do you cut out the squares to mount them or do you get that plastice piece that right in front of the radiator? Anyone have pics with this set up please post them.
