3800 V6 :)

i got ahold of a 3800 serries V6 from a 98 V6 camaro. can i swap this into my "new" 1989 firebird V6? i have the wiring harness and everything, will this be an easy swap?

if i get some headers, and a flowmaster system in the back, get a custom ground cam somewhere, ported heads, ported intake, etc. will the exhaust note be like a V8? i really want to swap this all in and have the first "built" V6 on the block

the transmission is different so you will need the automatic from the 3.8 or the correct bellhousing for a t5.you may can use the motor mounts for a 89 turbo trans am.

Can you swap it? Yes. Will it be easy? Not likely. As me and Ked have done (well, I've almost done), the 2.8->3.4 swap is the easiest swap you can do, other than the 2.8->2.8 that TomP is doing. You have the wiring harness? Great. Do you have the computer (the box)? Got some books to tell you which wire goes to where, such as the fuel pump, and all the dash guages? And, like zenish said, you'll need a different tranny and motor mounts. I'd like to see it work, as the 3.8's are very capable motors. But it's not gonna be easy.

The biggest difference is the sub frame platforms.
There is no engine, when you open the hood of a 4th gen F body.
It's all under the windshield!
Of course you can do this, but, you will be informing us how to procede.
Yes, the 2.8->3.4 is the WISEST alternative for our 3rd Gen cars.
Your biggest challenge MAY be the oil pan and suspension linkage interference.
Bolt in the tranny and go forward to the engine.
The engine mounts from the TTA is a GREAT idea!
Do you have to be smog legal?

forget the smog stuff, i want a built V6. the trans was already taken before i got to the car... and yes i have the computer. think the stock driveshaft will work?

i have NO booklets or anything about wire hook ups, and there's a lot of wires. im not sure if i want to do this now, since i barely ever have time under the hood anymore, ill have to give it some thought, measurements, call, junkyard searches, etc. before can get started anyway

What about the votec v6. I saw one that I can pick up complete out of a blazer w/ the trans.

Your best be is to get a service manual for the 98 camaro with a 2.8. You might have to switch out a lot of stuff, but it should be easy. Your best bet is to try to find a Tubo T/A wrecked and get parts off it or atleast measurements. I am getting one soon and I will vbe willing to help with measurements or whatever. Remember this won't be all that hard since a 3.8 was in a thirdgen. Every engine swap is time consuming, look at TomP doing a 2.8 to 2.8 Hasn't been the easiest thing in the world.
Good Luck though and it will definately be interesting.
You can buy Cam and Heads for 3.8s by the way, you dont have to have custom parts made.

the vortec V6 would be an even bigger pain than the 3.8.

Kyle, in you kill list you have a 1/4 ton chevy listed......there is no such thing.

Might want to make that a 1/2 ton

The vortec V-6 is an honorary V-8 for the purposes of swap. Is exactly the same height and width as a SBC. It's got the same front and back of a SBC. The only difference is it's 4-3/8" shorter. If your going to go through the trouble of putting a vortec V-6 in a car it makes ALOT more sense to put a 350 in.

wow, who makes a cam and heads for this motor? didnt know they were out there.

anyway, i wont really need to go too far to have sa stout car snce i was looking at some figures. some 305 TPIs had 190 HP, and this motor has 200. i know the 305 has a lot more torque, but it is something to think about

ill be taking measurements soon, but i broke my finger playing basketball, so its hard to measure with a cast on

it sucks to type with 1 hand too, so i better stop.

Cant work with a broke finger? SISSY! ...LOL

I broke my right hand middle finger in a fist fight. I had a splint from my wrist to the tip of my finger for 7 weeks. 2 days after I got the splint I had to change a starter of a ford escort. No I'm not left handed. By the end of 7 weeks I could do anything I wanted, shoot pool, wrench on the car, drink beer, I"d say giving someone the finger was by far the easiest.
