I finally fixed my exhaust problems, so i took the car out for a ride to see how the new engine runs. well it ran like crap. im thinking that it was the rockers adjusted wrong. What would happen if they were? the car has no power at all. what should i check out first?? thanks

I could be wrong about this dude , but its just a thought . I have a 88 camaro 2.8 , and the same thing happend to me , I got a rebuilt engine , took it out and it ran sooo slow . I brought it back to the shop and it needed a new EGR valve. When the engine is cold , (cus you dont want to burn your hand like I almost did , stick your hand under the round thingy and see if that little plastic plate can be moved up easy , if its real hard to move up , you prabably need a new one .It takes a little effort to move it up , but it should not be real hard to move up , goodluck dude ....But don't hold me to this because it could be something else ,Im no mechanic lol .goodluck , and let me know how things go , Wayne

I'm no mechanic either but I have heard that you have to kind of break in the engine. You got to go easy on it a while until everything is running good or something.....

I have heard that it takes a while to break in the engine, i just thought it would run better than it is. It revs really high in first gear and it seems like it takes a while to shift out of first. There are no exhaust leaks, but it is still very loud. I didnt think my flowmaster would be that loud. Thanks for the help, ill check out the egr valve next.

Timing-
If the timing is off, either it will not run or run rough.
Loosen the distb. and twist until the engine is smooth, then back off, ever so slightly.
Tighten down and take it for a ride.
How are all the vacuum manifold leaks?
Are there none?
How is the compression per cylinder? That will inform you of a lot of things! And how well the valves are adjusted! Higher per cylinder reading, better the valve/head sealing
Could be a tranny cable fix, too.
Did you move the tranny cable from the air inlet housing, when ya did this rebuild?
I have heard that 2.8 rebuilds do not equal the effort put out. That's why I went with the 3.4 swap. For the same effort, so much better rewards and the same cost.
Problem search and solve! Use a code scanner, maybe the answer is there.

Timing is a good bet, when I rebuilt my 2.8L it ran like complete crap, found out my initial timing was 18* BTDC Needless to say, fixing that made a world of difference.
Check out your vaccume lines as well as intake (throttle body) gaskets to make sure there are no vaccuume leaks. Good luck

Did you rebuild your distributor?
That's the best extra work you can do!
IS there still an exhaust clog?
Like a bad CC

Well i fixed the timing and that made a huge difference. The timing was way off. Its running much stronger now. It still doesnt seem right, but its much better now. I did the rebuild about 3 weeks ago. I started rebuilding my distributer and found out that i needed a new one. It was impossible to move, you couldnt turn it at all no matter what. The guy i bought the new one from was amazed that it wouldnt move. i'm going to check my compression next. thanks guys.
