It's easy dood.
Remove the bolt that goes through the power steering bracket and into the water pump.
Remove the 2 or 3 bolts that go through the PS pump bracket AND through the A/C bracket.(Remember where they go, They aren't all the same size)
Now, remove the 2 nuts on the back side of the PS pump.
Remove pump and wedge it somewhere where it doesn't fall.

uhm... I just replaced my water pump, and the only major accessory I had to yank was the alternator... there a difference between '86 and '89 that makes the PS pump a problem?

Yeah, there COULD BE!
When I swapped the 3.4 into my 1985, I really wanted to keep swapping stuff down to minimum.
BUT using the 1985 mounting assembly on that 1995 block, was the only answer/solution I could arrived at.
IT SEEMS GM changed the "stuff" little by little to make assembly line installation quicker, thus exting more cars to sell.
In my solution, I took everything from the timing chain cover on the engine block and used it on the 1995 block. My old accessory stuff worked/bolted on perfect.
I've even heard usage of torx head bolts for attaching some stuff. Yet, when I played with my swap, I DO NOT RECALL any torx head bolts.
But......
Yeah, there certainly can be a difference, no matter how little, that can change many answers here.
IT ALSO DEPENDS ON BUBBA THE GREAT MECHAINC THAT WORKED ON YOUR CAR PRIOR TO YOUR OWNERSHIP.
Or as I call it POS (Previous Owner Syndrome). You discover this the first time you fix a previous problem you just bought on your car.
Corvette have this problem all the time.
Bubba worked on my Wife's/Son's 1968 Camaro, ALOT. THE Jerk.

I came across this on the '89 2.8/'86 2.8 swap. The '89 2.8 uses Torx bolts to hold the water pump to the block... the '86 uses normal bolts.
On the '89 water pump, there's an additional bolt hole. The hole is located above the water pump's lower radiator hose outlet, and it's "centered" above the two bolts by the lower hose. The power steering bracket has a matching hole in it. A bolt goes through the larger power steering bracket and into the water pump- it's an extra bolt for the p/s bracket. In fact, the p/s bracket is larger; it covers that lower-hose area on the water pump.
When we put the '86 block into the '89 car, we didn't switch water pumps. I thought all 85-92 water pumps were the same, and never noticed that extra hole in the '89 pump. When we went to put the power steering pump onto the '86 block, we saw the hole in the bracket, and had an extra small bolt left over. (I think the extra bolt is a 7mm? It looked very small.) We checked the '89 block, and saw the raised mounting boss on it's '89 water pump.
So, we left the silly bolt off altogether. The bracket appears to have enough strength (and other mounting bolts) to not require the "extra" '89 bolt. This "extra" bolt might be present on all serpentine-belt equipped 2.8/3.1's, as in, '87-'92.
So, Karl & Techsmurf, that's why PurpleM's p/s pump was in the way for him, and not for us. Odd sht, eh?
