Graeme.....or any who have done the 700 to T5 swap

I have some questions for ya.
- When you did your T5 swap, how did you hook up the neutral safety switch?

-I noticed that the reverse light sensor on the 700r4 had 4 pins but the sensor on the T5 has 2 pins...what did you do?

-When you installed the pedals, did you lower the steering column or did you remove the whole thing?

-When you installed the T5, did you put the bellhousing on separately, or did you did you just put the whole tranny in at once?

Thanks guys.

1. The safety switch can just be jumped with a wire and left jumped all the time, but it is better to use the switch on the pedal and hook up the purple and yellow wires to it (they should just be hanging under the dash). If your pedal doesn't have a switch like mine did then you will have to make one out of brake pedal switch parts. I recommend the pedal switch because the safety switch is important for some computer functions.

2. I think you are looking at the wrong connector. The four pin square conn. on the 700R4 is for the torque converter lock-up witch can be disconnected and ignored(no codes will be thrown). The reverse wires are plugged into the shifter in the console. They are the blue and green wires in the connector that also houses a second set of neutral safety switch wires(yellow and purple).

3. I just removed the 2(?) bolts that hold it up and it dropped just enough to make it a bit easier. The pedals and clutch hydraulics are the worst part of swap. Have Fun.

4. Put the bellhousing on first, then the tranny. If you try to do both at the same time, it will take forever to get the input shaft lined up through the clutch plate and into the pilot bearing.

Also, are you going to switch to a manual computer chip? If you don't your idle will be strange and you might encounter oddities in your power brakes.

Hope this helps!
Dale

Dale,
Thanks, i just realized today that i was looking at the TCC switch.

About the chip, i took out the computer from the donor car and removed the little panel and there were 2 chips, 1 big and 1 small. I took them both. Do i need both??

And the Neutral switch, i'll take another look under the dash....maybe i missed something.

Thanks alot!

You only need the big chip with the plastic carrier. If the NSS wires are not under your dash then you can run jumpers from the purple and yellow wires on the console connector.

Ok, I found a connector under my dash that has 1 purple wire, 1 yellow, and 2 black. BUT it doesn't fit the NSS connector. I got the pedals/switches from an 85-87 firebird. Maybe they changed the design?? I guess i'll just order a 1990 NSS and see if it matches up.

Uhh.. don't put that chip in your car. If it's from that 85-87 it's 100% incompatable.

To give yourself a good starting point, you should go to a dealer and get the chip for a manual for your year. It is not the cheapest way to go but it is the safest and most reliable.

The earlier years cars used a completely different style computer so if the chip is not from your type it will not work at all. I don't know the switch over years but 87 sounds about right.
