Return the cooler.
You do not need an external tranny cooler on these cars.
UNLESS YOU RUN A SUPER LOOSE TORQUE CONVERTOR.
You need an external cooler on trucks and such.
Absolutly unnecessary on these cars.
Honest.
Get your money back on the thing. IF ya think you are having tranny cooling problems, remove radiator and have it cleaned out. Your car will run perfect, then. AND COOLER, too!
You realy do NOT need an external cooler on these F bodies.
For real!

Car: 1986 Firebird
Engine: 2.8 V6
Transmission: 700R4
I disagree completely; keep the cooler. The 700r4 runs hotter than any other trans out there- and engine size won't matter. Normal driving heats that tranny up fast.

PimpRide92, which Supercooler did you buy? I ask because mine came with the fittings... maybe your box should've had 'em.

I would have to agree.Given the point that if you don't haul trailers and such the cooler in the radiator is suffecient. But with 168,000 miles on my car and roughly 14,000 on my engine, the trany cooler I installed will hopefully prolong my tranys life. The 700's do run hotter, not sure exactly why.But with an external cooler it could do nothing more then help cool the trany.
For the size of the lines,I'm not positive right now.If someone doesn't beat my to it.I find out and drop it on here.

Check with the guys on the tranny side for their input. I still say it's not necessary.
HOW DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRANNY RUNS HOTTER?
DO YOU USE A TRANNY TEMP GAUGE?
The factory set up is fine for our car usage.
It's not good to have a tranny running to cool. Fluid needs to be a certain temp to do the job right.
BUT if ya believe ya must, run it as, the external cooler, then into the tranny radiator cooler, then to the tranny.

Transmission: 700R4
Because the guys on the trans board will say the same thing. The design of the 700r4 makes it run hotter. With two cars, same engines, one with a 700r4 trans, and one with a 350 trans, the 350 trans will run cooler. That's just how it is.... a trans temp gauge isn't necessary.

I asked B&M about the need to bypass the cooler in cold weather. They told me their coolers have some kind of limiting valve that won't allow fluid to migrate through the whole cooler if the fluid's too cool. I don't know what truth there is to that; but if you're worried, put a piece of thin sheetmetal in front of the cooler in winter.

A transmission can run perfectly on cold fluid; it's mechanically able. However, the reason that the fluid should become warm is to eliminate condensation (water) from the fluid. When the fluid heats up, the water will evaporate from the trans fluid, out of the vent in the top of the trans case. (The vent is a dirty-looking plastic tube- yet another reason not to take your car "swimming" through flooded roads- water will get in the trans.)

Since I mentioned the trans vent: Our axles also have a vent on top. It's on the passenger side of the driveshaft, on the center pumpkin, near the fill-hole. Take your car swimming and there's the chance you can get water in the axle!!

Tom, Thank you for the insite.
Unless it's my truck, I see no true need for them on the Firebird. Even in LA driving. Changin fluid once a year should cure many many problems of overheating. Modern fluids are wonderful compared to the old fluids & such.

Ah yes, the racing cooler; that's why I didn't buy it- no fittings/hose/brackets! Isn't that the polished one?

And I agree on that one Karl; if it's between adding a cooler, or changing the fluid/filter yearly, the fluid/filter change wins- that's the best thing.

And the plus side to a "cooler" set up is extra fluid(about a quart?) thru the system, to help with many situations.
But annually changing is a better deal.
Less road hazards to be damaged.
I have my S-10 Blazer one infront of my radiator, lines looped from radiator to lines to cooler back to the tranny lines.
I've had mine (truck) for years. I got it at a swap meet for pennies. Looks like a Derale unit from PAW.
On my Firebird, nope! I use the factory set up.
I BEAT MY BLAZER ALOT!! Held up, too!!!
