How much trouble would a 86 Z28 305 carb give me?
How much trouble would a 86 Z28 305 carb give me?
I'm sure he is completely stock. Yea I pulled my 92 around the back of our school and this crowd of people came up and looked my car over looked at the exhaust cause they heard me coming and I popped the hood cause I wanted my friend to look at my new spark plug wires cause Im having a bitch of a time getting the front passenger side one off. So this guy was like "I can take this" so OBV I dropped what I was saying to my friend and looked around to see who said that. This guy was like "yea I can take this" I was like "what u got?" and he says "a 86 Z28 carb" and automatically I think (hmmmm a 1986...shouldn't be that fast) and plus he adds that it is a 305. It is an automatic so I'm pretty much sure I can get a jump on him. But what I'm worried about is him running me down. What should I do to get another kill?
(for those of you who know me I didnt think it would be exactly fair to whip out a 97 Z so its gotta be the RS)

OvrClck350: You might have trouble if it's modded
OvrClck350: Stock?
Stopsign696: stock
OvrClck350: Weird....
Stopsign696: y?
OvrClck350: He's either got 165 or 190HP
OvrClck350: There were 2 versions of the 86 carb
OvrClck350: One was HO, the other wasn't.
OvrClck350: So either way, he's got ya.
OvrClck350: More torque AND more HP.
OvrClck350: You're dead.
Stopsign696: sigh
Stopsign696: ****
Stopsign696: camshaft?
OvrClck350: Spray that hoe and you may have em.
OvrClck350: I dunno, both were 4bbl, but one was termed a 4bbl HO
OvrClck350: So that's in the carb
OvrClck350: I guess it could be in the cam too tho
Stopsign696: no i mean what if i got a camshaft
OvrClck350: A lot of those 305's had peanut cam's.
OvrClck350: Oh....nah, you're still dead.
OvrClck350: You'd have to gain prolly at least 40HP from stock to even maybe take the 165 HP one.
OvrClck350: Figure it this way...what you don't edge out in torque, you have to make up w/ HP.
Stopsign696: i know
OvrClck350: And a Carb isn't going to have breathing problems at higher RPM's like MPFI will.
Stopsign696: im only 20hp shy of him tho
OvrClck350: But torque.
OvrClck350: That'll kill ya.
Stopsign696: i know thats whats got me
Stopsign696: thats y i need that kick *** launch
Stopsign696: but i need my **** to hook up like a ****
OvrClck350: He'll grab you off the line though.
OvrClck350: 190@4800 240@3200
Stopsign696: yea but he cant drive, he is only 15
OvrClck350: OR- 165@4400 250@2000
OvrClck350: Yah, but w/ that much more torque, punch it and go.
OvrClck350: That's all he'll need to know to spank your @$$.
Stopsign696: i need some head work, camshaft and then i think i can play with him
OvrClck350: Plus his gearing is either going to be 3.23 or 3.73....
OvrClck350: So it's so close to yours....yours being 3.42's.
OvrClck350: If he had 2.73's I'd say you might have a chance off the line.
Stopsign696: hmmmm
OvrClck350: Sorry man.
There's my opinion, you guys discuss it. BTW, this should be in the Street Racing board, but they flame the 6's, so I'll leave it here unless someone wants to complain.

IF you get a good launch and keep the engine in the powerband you could take him. It's going to take the driver for sure. Your going up against an unknown, what has he done to his car? Can he drive it?`Will he even show up? ...
87RS402 its gonna take more than keeping it in the power band. And plus I cant grab 2nd without wheel spin. So I loose ground there. What do you guys think a camshaft would do for the race?

Ive saved my *** in more races than i can count by learning to shift without moving the foot from the gas... ive taken many of the same ones you are trying, so i dunno..for insurance, take 500 bucks and 2 hours and install nitrous...

I've beaten cars that have loads more torque than I do....
Honestly, its gonna be a real close race. But if you get that hop off the line, he'll barely, if at all catch up to you. Besides, he's prolly carring more weight than you so the power advantage he's got over you is mellowed out a bit.

My friend has a 90 RS with a 305 it used to be TBI but he made it carbed took all the emissions off and put headers and all that on i went in it for a ride while i was visiting him and it felt liek it lost power if anything. Me and him raced a few times too it was ways a tossup who won cuz eitherd hed totaly spank me or id sppank him or wed be neck and neck for ever and we tied. So basicly its a 50/50 chance id say but you shoul dbe able to take him. Oh ya the #1 wire is a bitch to get off and on.

Have ya seen the car? It might be all clapped out... swipe a finger in his exhaust pipe when he's not looking. If your finger's covered in oil, you'll probably win.
Go thru the reader's rides section; look for '86 Z28 305's with 1/4 mile times.

Just race him. If you lose the race you really lost nothing because hes the one with a V8 and talking smack. Hell if you just keep it close it will make him look bad.
I dont think you will win because you dont have that many mods that add big power. I mean you have some, but not enough. If he beats your 6 you always have the LT1 and he wont even think about beating that one.
The way I see it is try your best and if he spins off the line and you get a jump he will have to run you down and gives you the advantage. If he can drive you fu(ked.
Sorry but its just the truth of why they had V8s... they are faster.

V8er's 0.2
You have the weight advantage and the quicker reving advantage. Most likely you also have a better running car with less miles.
It would be interesting to see this race.
My 12/85 "86"Z28 305 HO 4bbl, would rip some butt on the bottem but it dident have squat in the midrange. 2.8's pull better in the midrange stock for stock. If I were you, I would feel good with just keeping up with him because thats probably the best you will do under normal circumstances.
Well Good Luck!

Plans: Possibly add N20 for next season.
82 Firebird, 305/350 currently being moth balled.
Current plans: Rebuild 305 with flat tops instead of the dished "cups" for pistons or slightly built 327 with the 58cc heads from the LG4, Upgrade the 2:73 to 3:73 or 3:42 and replace the turbo 350 with 700r4.

Well we raced today after school and I did lose but only by about 2 car lengths. I was expecting that. So I told him to wait there and I went home and got the Z and raced him again. (he thought he could beat it, no lie
) I let him get a car length on me and then I planted it. All I will say is it was nasty. So now I need to know how I can beat him with the RS. Come on guys help me out!!!

Well there are many ways to add more power. What are you willing to do to win. Full engine swap? Nitrous? How much are you willing to spend. YOu know you will get better results if you do the same stuff to the LT1.
If you dont have a 3.42 posi get them. That ought to make up the 2 car lengths in a short race.

Kyle you know I'm gonna have that 3.8 in my car sooner or later. I am just not in that big of a hurry right now for it. I mean I have a hella fast car now as it is with the Z28. I'm just playing with the 3.1L now and see what I can get out of it.

Monkie, I assume he took that 2 car length jump from the line right?
If so I bet you you could at least stay deadnutz with him if you poped some 3:73's in the RS.
