New toys

Hey guys,

I'm just about to order some new toys for my car and was wondering what kind of luck you guys have had with the parts.

So far I am thinking about putting a Catco Cat on there and a flowmaster 80 (not up for debate I don't care for Dynomax).

Also I built a nice little induction mod with the help of someone on the board.

haven't done the Catco yet, but it'll be better than a stock cat, the flowmaster though is awesome, i'd highly recomend an 80 series they'll sound great, screaming loud!!! as far as your induction, is it Cold Air or ram air or what? just curious. hopefully you've got a K&N conical on there, if you combine more induction and greater exaust you'll have excellent performance gains, the other way is to boost compression.

I have done both the Flowmaster and the Catco Cat. I love 'em both. I have also done the dual snorkle thing.

Heres a break done of what I felt and saw.

First my RS chose to eject my stock muffler from the car, and the muffler shop talk me into the Flowmaster with tips. I can't thank him enough. There was a noticable increase in pickup and the fuel milage increased a bit.

Secound I did the dual snorkle and cut off the bottom of the air box and K&N filters. Once again there was a noticable increase in pick.

Third at some point I met the business side of a speed bump which left a large dent and a small tear in the cat. Replaced it with Catco cat. I notice it change the sound of the car little, but it was a good change. Sounds a little meaner now. It's now eaiser to get up to speed, but can't real tell that much difference in pick up. Also as all ways with a good functioning cat the fuel economy increased a little. All in all I'm happy with Catco.

One more thing all piping from the cat back was custom mandrle bent at the muffler shop. I feel this is a must as it realy wont help if the pipes are cloging everything up, and it doesn't cost that much more.

At some point I will go back to the muffler shop and have them custom make me a "Y" pipe. The stock pipe is more like a "T" which looks like it might be robbing power.


I have all ways belived that doing the cat back and intake is a good fondation to start from before doing any major engine mods. make sure it can breath first!

I have the catco. It works great. I had a dirty cat, then hollowed it out then tossed the high flow on. I rahter have the catco over the hollowed out cat.


DYNOMAX for the v6 rules...

Well the induction is cold air induction style, made with 3" pvc (spraypainted a glossy black) and topped off with a 9" long conical K&N. It looks great and has helped a bit.

I am going to go with the 80 series flowmaster, my car already sounds pretty mean (I don't know why)with the new muffler I bought a few months ago so I think it will sound awsome with the new muffler and catco.

OH, I just had a question. What kind of pipes should I get for the exaust?

I just got a new pipe from the Cat back, so that is ok. Now, how should I get the back pipes done?

correct me if i am wrong, but the flowmaster is stainless steel...and in that case i would guess the cat would be too.

but its easy. if you are gonna spend the money to get your pipes custom bent then you gotta go stainles steel. if not its gonna rot out and you will have to do it again.

Sorry, I ment what size pipes should I use EXITING the muffler.

I have steel pipeing from the cat back to the muffler, but they actually put smaller pipes into the muffler and filled the gap by welding it shut. so what I am saying is that the exit pipe for the Flowmaster 80 is (not sure) 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 inches. should I get pipeing that fits OVER the exit of the muffler?

Use whatever pipe fits inside the muffler outlets. Thats how tailpipes are done, anyway... they always go "inside" the muffler. So you're not getting a Flowmaster cat-back, you're just getting the muffler? Why not buy their cat-back? You'll probably get better quality in the long run... and it might be cheaper.

Er, let me guess, though; you're having a shop install it? You should really install it yourself; welding is NOT needed for an aftermarket exhaust system designed for a car. If it was a custom exhaust, well, yeah, it'd need welding, but if all the pipes are slip-fit, welding isn't needed at all. Even the catalytic convertor is a bolt-on!!

I'll do some research for the catback flowmaster ($$$). I thought the job was badly done on my stock muffler... The damn pipes are already rusted!!! oh well, too late now.

thanks, perhaps I will give it a shot myself. It doesn't look like a hard job. but I think they welded the muffler to my frame using a bracket. I'm not going back there again.

I looked for the Flowmaster Catback to check price and can't find anything. anyone have a part number or site that I can look? thanks.

i have a 92 rs, i have a complete dynomax exaust system with pipes facing straight back insted of angled down, and i have terminator dual outlet tips with resinators on each pipe, sounds mean, like an 8 cylinder. i cut my converter off and put in a straight pipe, and replaced my air filter with a K&N, replaced the crank, and it runs great, i've beaten quite a few 5.0 stangs, and most recently i replaced my air intake with a tpi intake with the dual inlets that form around the hood latch, havent bought K&N's for it yet but noticed more power and gets to high speeds a lot faster.

i would suggets 2.5" for a v6....i think three is too large, but there are some guys here running 3".

a while back there was a post about pipe diameter vs. hp to use as a rull of thumb...i can't seem to find it now, but maybe someone else remembers it....
