A manifold leak will cause a popping sound in the exhaust when you let off the gas. Always has with every manifold leak i have fixed . Unless it is a small leak, than you probably wouldnt notice the popping.
A very rich fuel mixture will also cause backfires during deceleration because of unspent fuel igniting in the pipe. But I dont believe this is the case.
Willing to bet its the exhaust manifold gasket.

Yes, I've got the ticking right now, also. It is usually because some jackass puts a gasket on the manifold in the first place. The 60* V6 motor that uses iron heads was not designed to utilize a gasket. It was supposed to be a metal to metal contact. If you are reassembling, you may want to put a high heat silicone compound on both the head and manifold, but don't bother with a gasket. As soon as you encounter a situation in which there is enough backpressure, it'll just blow out the side, hence the "ticking" sound you hear.

Well, the whole problem is... is it doesn't happen all the time. I have a broken exhaust and it does pop and gargle a little on decel, but I'm talking at idle and light loads... I'll stand behind the car and I can clearly hear little pops, if i stand at the engine bay sometimes I can hear the ticks, sometimes it'll be -really- loud, other times it barely noticeable. I do have another mystery noise that sounds as if air were escaping someplace, so I wonder if it's related. I'll bring it to a shop sometime soon and have them take a look over it... unless there is a way that I can positively pin it down?

I have that leaking air sound too, back near the exhaust when the car is runnin, sounds like a constant hissing sound, not a high pitched hissing sound though.

Hey 87 Firebird I did not realize that the 2.8 did not utilize exhaust manifold gaskets.
I have never had to work on the manifolds on a 2.8 . What I was referring to was other vehicles I have worked on , and what the problem sounded like to me. He has an exhaust leak somewhere near the manifold.
Like I said I didnt realize the 2.8 was gasketless thanks for the Info.

Holy triple-post Batman!
My car is insuranceless at the moment (and has been all month, and I didn't notice (oops!!!)) so it's not moving until I get my paperwork done. I'm keeping you guys updated but it probably won't make it to a shop until next week.
