Belt problem
Belt problem
Hey dudes
I asked this in general engine, only general replies so far and was hoping for something more specific.
I rebuilt a 87 a/c equiped 2.8 for a non-a/c car. It ran deadly until the belt almost came off, then I broke tensioner try to get it off. The belt I bought was way too tight in retrospect.
I've tried to get an idler pully to no avail.
sounds like a low demand expensive part anyway.
I bought a belt for no smog, no a/c. The dealer is saying the p/s brackets are the same. The belt comes very close to itself where it comes back over the waterpump from the p/s pump, it doesn't look right, but it's was on as per the diagram ontop the rad.
Anyone do this before? What was the solution?
An what to you think superman would do?
Thanks

Take a piece of string and wrap it around the pullies you want it to go. mark it at the end then subtract about 2-3 inches. take that number to an auto parts store and they "Should" be able to match it up.
if you need a new tensioner, and every other damn accersory, brand new!, email me. im still parting out my 2.8. nothingssafe@bolt.com

Noones telling me what I want to hear. I hate when that happens!
.All new accessories? I'm not sure about that, I'll have to do some crossreferenceing at the parts store. I'm thinkin it's more likely I'll need alll new braketry.
Could someone without A/c tell me their clearence between where belt goes around the water pump and back over from the power steering pump. Also how many bolts are holding the bracket to the engine? and are there two empty boltholes in the p/s bracket for the a/c bracket?
That would give me some deadly clues. I know I can get a whole pump+bracket from a 85 Firebird 2.8 no a/c for $25. I feeling that won't work, different belt system, but if i re-use my pully.... guessing now
Thanks for the replies so far
Chris

I think he means that if you want it, he's got it for sale...
I don't see why you'd need new bracketry...
Hay, wait, did you put this motor in your '83? Why didn't you use the brackets from the '83 on the '87 block?

Tom, I bought the car without the original engine/tranny. Remember about four months ago I was asking all sorts of wild, clueless q's? Well I'm a few months behind because of a last minute decision to go to collage and I didn't plan on a rebuild AND upgrading to MPFI. A big reason I cant/wouldn't use the old belt system anyways is the new electric fan (which also always on due to the missing a/c compressor, i'll fiquire that one out later).
I'm still stuck on this but today I have time to check and see if I can find some newly wrecked 87ish firebirds and get some idea's.
I think I bent the p/s bracket along with breaking the tensioner, the pully doesn't line up exactly, it looks bent out about 5 deg. hopefully the wrecker will let me use a pully removal tool so I can get away with just getting the bracket.
HEY wait! I did get the old p/s pump and bracket with the car. uh wait that don't help at all, I don't think it's even Aluminum.
But incase I don't find the right car today I'm still looking for someone with an V6 87 no a/c, single serpentine belt system to answer the last post. Hhmm I can always grab a used one for a test drive. that could be entertaining, I wonder if they would notice if it came back an automatic

Update:
Found an 87 Camaro no a/c
The p/s bracket the same as far I can tell, I just forgot about the back bracket . But my power steering pump pully's further away from where it should be somehow. The camaro's pump was straight up and down(mines tilted) and it's bracket DID have holes drilled for the a/c bracket. The belt part # was the same as one I bought for my firebird. I took it just in case I end up needing a half worn out one. I took it's tensioner too. a steal at $7 didn't have torque arm bushing or bracket I need badly though.
Now I think it may be more of question on what I did wrong.

The solution for next person to try this
What camaro hunter said, measure it up. The p/s bracket IS different. It dawned on me there is no room for an a/c compressor if the pump is straight up and down. So in the end I wasted $20 on a belt and I broke my tensioner because I forced it on.
The pump was going back and forth because I left out the back bracket. I thought it was an a/c piece (it's been almost five months since I took it apart).
Now for something completely different and even more fun: Brake fluid purge. Ahh screw that I'll get my helper monkey's to do it, they look bored.
Thanks all
