well our 2.8L's don't come with headers. They did make some back in the day, but now the one's you'll find will be either for a a 2.8L chevy S10, or a 3.4L chevy block in the camaro. the 3.4L headers require the bending of the headers or a custom Y-Pipe.

85f,

I'm going to have a custom Y pipe made. So if understand right the 3.4 headers will work? I have a 3.1L but I think the clearence issue between the 2.8 and 3.1 are the same. What are thoughts about doing this to a 3.1?

Actually, the 3.4 headers need both... custom bending, AND a custom Y-pipe.

Ways to get around this.
Get a CUSTOM "Y" Pipe made.
That frees up about 5+ HP, mate it to a great flowing CC (Don's Hot Rod in Phoenix sells them for $60+ shipping) at 2 1/2" in & out, mate that to the better flowing V-8 front to rear muffler pipe out of a wrecking yard (IT MAY BE LARGER then the V-6, NOT PROMISING) and a new muffler of your choice.
Just not the two chamber Flowmaster (personal choice of bad decision). Make it Three chamber Flowmaster muffler or many other choices & you'll enjoy it much longer (the exhaust system).
Headers are NOT legal for our cars. YET, you can make exhaust flow very well, by doing my suggestions.
Especially that "Y" pipe section. Gain can EASILY be 10+hp and better fuel milage and more responsive, too.
You win all around for the dollars invested.

Ok Fiream quit teasing me with your headers! I haven't been able to find them any ware. I've been searching for used ones, but can't find them.

Tom,
What part needs to be bent? Is it the flange or the pipes?

Ked85,

Not legal? Why not? The AIR injection goes into the cat and not the exhuast manifold. So there is no need for to tap holes for it. All though I want to wait and see if I pass the sniffer test with mods I currently have. My main goal is to make the car fast and more fuel economical at te same still be able to past the smog test. They don't realy do a physical inspection of the car but if they see obvious things my modified air intake they fail the car. So I keept the stock air box and tubing to swap back on for test day. The exhaust manifolds are hard to see as it is, and I don't think they will know the difference any ways.

We discussed this a while ago... Blazer and S-10 2.8 Chevy headers fit, and fit well.. you just need a Y-pipe.

I am new to the car thing, but don't you have to have headers or am I misunderstanding what you are saying here?

no, headers are an aftermarket performance tubular exhaust system. cars come from the factory with restrictive cast iron exhaust manifolds. unfortunately, nobody makes a set of headers to put on our little V6's. hope that clears it up for ya

Hi Bitchin RS.
You gotta understand, if there is NOT a CARB tag on the item or a sticker with CARB number (making that specific item you added under your vehicle hood) 99.9% of smog stations will flunk ya on the visual alone, thus denying ya the "CA smog passed" status.
Not my rules.
That why I also went to the more cubic inches of the 3.4 swap.
I got what more power I needed.
Now if ya want to swap out exhaust system to pass smog, .....
Heck want to start on my 1985 Firebird for practice? I need to drop exhaust for the tank swap/replace bad fuel pump mission. LOL!!
2.8/3.4 headers are available from Hooker & Hedman, Edelbrock.
BUT, they are not "smog legal" additions to your vehicle. PLUS the ones from/for the S-10 Blazers will work with a bit of tweaking.
The part numbers are:
Edelbrock-EDE6885 & 6895 (designed for a 2 1/2" slip on CC)
Hedman- 69250
Hooker- HOO-2833

Numbers from a PAW catalog
818-678-3000-PAW

ALL THE ABOVE ARE NOT SMOG LEGAL FOR OUR APPLICATION.
ALL ABOVE FOR BLAZERS FROM THE 80's w/2.8
Gotta go Son crying!
BYe

DAM DAM DAM.

I can't lay the car up long enough to do the swap. even though I'm unemployed right now, but found a good lead that might pan out in a week, my girl friend still uses it to get to work every day.

I'll proboly just stick with my orginal plan and save some money up and find a nice '92 Camaro with a 350 in it. I would still keep the RS 3.1L, but the 350 would be for play.

How about a 1993 to 95 (not 100% sure of year, sorry), White/T-Top low milage Camaro? V-6, Auto, loaded.
Know how good that car looks to me right now? It's available for the $7K range, in LA. Personal friend, not a dealer. It's his Dad's. Right now, this guys Son is driving it to high school. AND LOVING IT! Get ahold of me off line & I'll pass ya more details if ya like. Hope (VERY MUCH) the work lead pans out. Don't start a project now, keep the girlfriend happy/car on the road.
