Figured as much. Better off lookin' for a 305 or 350 to drop in there when I get the money. Plenty of them around town...

But that wasn't the question! The correct answer is: none that you'd notice so don't waste your time/money!!! You have to be going very fast to get appreciable ram effect.

83 carbureted 2.8 with an auto? Short of a CFI 305, any 305 is an upgrade. LOL

opp slol didnt relize he had a carbed 2.8 in that case a 305 would be an upgrade, but then again swaping over the 2.8 to efi heads and efi system would be better then the 305 lol

Re: How much performance to be had by raim air intake?

I'd be worried the early bottom end would then become the weak link... The later 60* engines were solid, but the early engines always seem to spin bearings, or put rods through the block. At one time the corner of my room mate's shop had about 6 2.8s out of Fieros, all with ventilated blocks.

My 3.1 took a lot of uncensored abuse... My 84 2.8 failed under it's first SERIOUS beating. If I'd been nice to it, it probably would have gone forever. But that's not what you do with a $200 beater. LOL

But seriously, has anyone measured the ram effect on different engines? I know it's not significant until high speeds but just how high?

for a 3.1 the ram air effect works the best at 120 off a cliff.

thats a myth, i searched the hell out of this subject last month, any well made Ram air box/hood system WILL infact increase hp over 55mph starting at a low .98% and increases at about every 15mph interval 55MPH (+.98% of total HP) 70MPH (+1.05% of total HP) and so on. its not ALOT, but it is an increase, so if a car with 300 HP drove 55-200 mph (like a vette, the HP will compound increase per interval a small amount of % and maxes out at whatever top speed the car can achieve. It took me awile but i found some guys who tested 2 C5's, one w/RA one w/o and they came up with the exact mathematical % of compounded increase in power per mph on a RA C5. Try googling "pitot tube Ram air C5 corvette". its an interesting read.

Kind of missing the point... It's a 1983 2.8. 1% of nothing is still nothing. And more importantly... The carbed 2.8 uses the same factory ram air as carbed V8s, and TBI cars. It's already ram air.

Cold Air? yes. Ram Air? no.

Personally I'd stay away from running a "ram air" intake through anything other than the fog lights (if you have that option), because otherwise you begin to get dangerously close to rice if you haven't done a decent amount of mods to the rest of the engine
