Re: timing

Any idea why he did it? If it starts hard that usually means there is to much timing advance.

You can and you might gain a few ponies at the expense of premium fuel. If you don't mind how it runs live with it otherwise have him put it back. If it knocks then you will have other problems.

Sounds like you need to get the timing set correctly. If you are in a real bind mark the distributor with a sharpie in a few places then retard the timing a little.

Re: timing

12 or 13 aint gonna hurt it. adjusting that torx screw was the wrong thing to do, though. That's why the idle is high. sounds like the iac valve needs to be cleaned and reset. if you haven't changed your spark plugs, change them (and wires).

Re: timing

take the iac out of the top of the tb and use some carb cleaner on it. you can take the top plate off of the tb, also to clean it out. you may need a new gasket if you take that off. I forget the proper process for resetting it...do some searching or maybe someone else will chime in on that one.
you aren't supposed to adjust that screw though. that tells the throttle position sensor that you have cracked the throttle blade open...it won't idle right.

Re: timing

You didn't reset the ECM before you tried anything else after your mechanic worked on the engine... The 1227730 uses set parameters to run the engine, and if you put new parts on or make adjustments to help things along, you need to start the ECM off at square one so it can learn which parts are actually working again the way they're supposed to.

I used to have to set my timing at around 18* BTDC (because the defective ignition module wouldn't allow 10*), and didn't have much trouble. On 87 octane pump gas.

Idle speed should be set with the engine HOT to 700 RPM with an auto trans and about 600 in Neutral for a manual. With the idle air control motor disconnected and closing off the throttle bypass air passage.

Re: timing

The air passage is what the working end of the IAC seats against to either open or close off additional flow of air into the intake. The air bypasses the throttle plate by going in a passage around it. You will need to jump the ALDL as though you're looking for trouble codes (the top 2 right hand terminals) and turn the key to the ON position, without starting the engine, for 30 seconds before unplugging the IAC and turning the key off. Pull the jumper from the ALDL and start the engine, allowing it to warm up before setting the idle speed (fan should come on and then go off again just to make sure).

All this is AFTER you disconnect the battery for a minute or so and then reconnect it to set the ECM to the base tables.
