http://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-Chevy-43...fa29aa&vxp=mtr

on my 3.1 i have long slot non roller tips 1.6 rockers from a sbc, i just used the factory rocker ***** and lock nuts

if u want to buy a full roller rocker ur going to have to either buy the comp cams conversion studs metric to 3/8's or spend about 300 bucks for the comp cams full roller rockers for the 10mm stud

I do have to agree with these guys as I didnt completly assemble the engine but almost did. Besides the crank, i had to put it all together. Really get some tips from these guys and youd be amazed on what you can do. If you have the $$ then have someone else do it, but if not then it is something you can do yourself with some research and patients.

I took this to the 2nd pic in a good 4-5hrs of assemblely. Takes time but if you just pay attention to detail, keep everything clean, and assembly lube the crap outta stuff you will be ok.

The part that was a PITA was cleaning up the block and painting everything as i didnt take it to a shop to acid dip/clean it. Cleaning and painting took about 6 hrs of time...lmao

Have to add if you are going with rockers and such might as well get a delta cam. Mine was 118 shipped to the door with lifters. Great deal in my mind.

they dont have an online catalog , u just call them up and order ur cam

ur either going to want the 260 grind or the 272 grind depending on the use of ur car

street driven mostly get the 260
if ur going to race it and have a high stall coverter and or 5 speed get the 272
cant use 1.6 rockers on the 272 grind cam though

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

thanks. I'll give them a call. I'm so new to this, i feel like I don't know ANYTHING, like... If I get the different cam and rockers, do I have to get different pushrods too?

it makes me mad that I OWN this book, and I can't freaking FIND it anywhere.. It's been misplaced

just clean up the stockers very well, and roll them across a piece of glass, if they make tap or ticking sounds when they roll across this means they are slightly bent and need to be replaced

get ur cam before the rockers this way u dont run into issues with the valve lift numbers

what are ur intended use of the car?
are u going to port the heads/intake

or is this purley a stock rebuiild

and dont worry about that book, between all the members here there is a ton more knowledge then what is inside that book

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

it's going to be for a driver, but If there's mods that I should make at this point I'm going to do them before I put it together. If they don't happen now, they never will

It's NOT going to be for racing, but If mods can be made affordably and effectively, I'll do them

Not At all! I just had an opportunity to get an extra engine complete so I jumped on it

The 2.8 is running strong like brand new, which is why I'm hesitant to pull it at all. The 3.4 is like insurance for now.

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

def fport and polish the heads, its basically free hp, get the 260 grind cam this cam give much better midrange and lower upper rpm power

i really wouldnt worry about replacing the rockers roller tips might be worth 2-3 hp

if u want they also have a 252 grind cam wich gives the best low end boost with a lil bump in the midrange. i presonally even for a street only car would still do the 260.
even with street driving ur in the mid rpm range more then the bottom

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

With my 3:42 rear end and a manual transmission, It already jumps off the line respectably (for a 2.8)

I'd be more interested in mid range power and highway punch. Does that make sense?

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

I'll put this an an aside... It's also in the back of my mind that I might add a turbo to the 3.4 later.... thought I would mention that in case it changes anything

it's a "might" and a "maybe" but it's worth thinking about

if its a possiblity u may go turbo down the road the only thing different u would do in asembling the engine is use a looser top ring gap on the pistons

the 260 cam is a great all around cam , and is a good mild turbo cam

if u have a stock clutch deff look into upgrading the clutch disk, the stock clutch will be iffy on the 3.4 with ported heads and cam, and prolly wont hold at all with a turbo

the t5 will live with the power from a turbo engine as long a su dont put slicks on the car and do clutch dumps @ 4k rpms

for everyday street driving with a turbo it will last just fine

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

ok, heads need to be ported and polished.

Forget the rockers,, right?

get a 260 cam.

I'm looking at headers, but I'm slightly worried that I'll have to lose the air pump and not be able to pass the visible inspection and get the car tagged

I don't know, I went through 2 in as many years, with my turbo 3.2L, I wasn't nice to it, but I didn't use slicks or high RPM launches, neither trans were toast by any means, but 2nd gear IIRC was howling after not long, which is why I will NEVER use a T5 again for anything more than stock applications.

got it on the stand tonight (no hoist, so it was tricky)

not sure how long it will stay there, I want to get it to a machine shop to get it checked out and cleaned.

it is an iffy deal
i had a 87 iroc with a healthy 383 i never put slicks ont he car but i did abuse it badly ( was my street race car when i was younger) i powershifted it high rpm clutch dump launches and it never broke in the 2 years i had the car, though i did lose the syncros 1-2 shift would always grind
but it never failed me

on the other hand i have seen bone stock 305's destroy t5's

six by any chance were u the one who was big into nisian engines?
friend who owns the farm were my iroc is currently at is looking into turbocharging his pickup truck and it has a 2.4L 4 cyl in it

i know somone in the v6 section knows alot about nissian stuff and i have a few questions

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

Love this thread.

Port an polish those heads and a cam and youll love the power to be had. The 260 cam isnt to strong. I really didnt notice a difference till I puched the throttle and it would not die above 4krpms like before. It will definily make the driving experience much funner for ya. But on my blend the heads were ported so im sure that played a great deal with it.

Im not sure if anyone said it or if you allready know but definitly get a new timing set while your in there and a new o-ring for the dizzy.

When I had my 3.4, I got a Melling MTC-5 cam/lifter set from Summit for around $100 and loved it. It's a nice budget cam to pick up and good quality. Also Comp Cams 1.52 roller tip rockers... you'll be happy.

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

58mark, What color are you planning on painting the block..exc?

Im not sure where you got a Melling Mtc-5 lifter and cam for 100 bucks. As its closer to 200 bucks from summit. All I see is the advertised data which is worthless compared to the test data in my mind on the net. Drdave do you have any paperwork on the test data of that cam? Id be interested to see the numbers compared to the sheet I linked up a few post back on this thread. IIRC that cam is basically the same as a delta 260 cam.

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

I'm thinking of a medium dark red, to match the stripes on the outside of the car. the car has a Grey/Black/red thing going on

I'm going to bright dip all the aluminum parts, and have the black brackets powdercoated. It should look very sharp, especially with my polished plenum

Re: 58mark's 3.4 swap thread

My bad, it was just the cam that was a lil over $100. Sorry it's been a while since I did mine (almost a decade). You can get the cam for under $120 from autozone. I dont have anything, but if you do a search on "MTC-5", there was a lot of posts regarding this cam back in 2003-2005 or so. A lot of us were looking into it/buying it (Doward, Dale, KED, Trek, myself, etc)

you will need to keep the 2.8 timing cover, as a 3.4 doesn't have the timing marks (ecm keep timing)
