Re: V6 2.8 mpfi

I have an 89 V6 with around 200K that is still going strong. It's hard to say how long they will last. Anytime you get over 200K on an american made engine, you are into bonus time.

It's a good question.... It seems you never hear of any of these cars getting 300 to 400 K because eventually they all get engine swaps for more power, at least around here.

Mostly because TomP isn't around anymore... I believe he had over 300K on his factory 86 2.8 when the body went to crap. Any engine will last as long as you need it to with proper maintenance (don't run the oil 2000 miles over, don't let the head gaskets be bad for too long, etc).

It's not a V6, but I've personally seen a 350 out of a work truck that had over 350K on it that was rebuilt without really needing it. Was stained inside from the oil, but there was no crud and everything was nice inside.

My 88 Pontiac firebird 2.8 has 220,000 miles on it. The engine wasn't too bad, but developed fuel tank issues so I sold it for a 4 banger. LOL, 2 years later...I buy a 87 Camaro 2.8 with 83,000 miles. I will keep this engine till it falls out, so I will post up how long it will last eventually.

Re: V6 2.8 mpfi

I had 320k on my engine before I replaced it. It developed a small crack in one of the heads and I decided to replace the whole thing. Kind of wish I left it as is and really drove it to the ground.

Ever hear about the straight 6's by Ford and Chevy? And the slant six mopars? All are very reliable engines and are well known for going to the 300k mark with no major issues. Some Ford guys even claim to have over 400k on original equipment. I have a 95 f150 with a 300 six, has 195k miles and runs smooth as silk.

That's awsome. My motor runs good with 201 k on it but it talks out and the mechanic can't fix it completely. It only stalls when I start the motor up and put it in drive or reverse. With out giving it has. Once I step in the pedal it seems to hang in there at redlights without stalling. No idea Wat it is .

I had a buddy with a dodge intrepid that was the same way. Ended up being something in the transmission. New tranny = no more issues. It would die as soon as he put it in gear, though.

Re: V6 2.8 mpfi

Maybe your mechanic ought to look up the GM TSB for cold hesitation, stall, sag... If he has ALLData. Yes, there is a TSB on it. I have a printed copy of it I got in 2004 at school (they had access to the GM Service system due to being an ASEP school). May not be for 89s, but it should point him in the right direction...

Re: V6 2.8 mpfi

My 87 2.8 had 200k on it when I bought it then put another 150k on it before it blew(being stupid). Replace the 2.8 with a brand new one and it currently has 75k and going strong. It ran great before the motor blew too.

I have an 88 v6 mpfi2.8, and its pushing 330,*** miles and its still going good, defiantly starting to show it's age, but still runs great. After tune up and replacing all the old sensors.

I missed you too Maverick! 292,000 miles actually, just started it up two weekends ago after it sitting for 2 years. Thought the ignition switch was stuck on "crank", pulled the column to replace it, and turns it out it tested fine on my kitchen floor so I put the column back in. I put some fresh gas in it and it fired right up.

But yeah the body-rot is still just as bad as ever, thus why I'm not driving it, don't want it to get any worse. One day it'll be back on the road... at least that's the plan anyway.
