2.8 MAF diagrams needed.

My car had a 3.1 installed. The mechanic completely hacked out my MAF system. Can anyone please help me recreate the MAF harness and relay wiring? I am a bit desperate. I havent found a solid source for a complete description.

Here is the wiring for an '87, the MAF relay is located on the radiator support, passenger side.

RBob.

No , our 6 cylinder MAF system has a power relay only , and no MAF burnoff relay . The MAF for our cars is a 3 wire unit , wheras the MAF for the eight cylinder cars is a 5 wire unit and does use the second relay .

So. Can you verify the relays behind the master cylinder. can you please point me to a wiring diagram. it looks like he hacked out everything related to the mass airflow sensor.
man i really appreciate it. and... you are positive that the 1987 2.8 did not have 2 relays?

Hi Crazybird ,

Yes , I am 100% certain that our 2.8 sixes only have one relay that involves the MAF , and that it is where RBob said , on the passenger's side of the car at the radiator support . This relay switches the +12v to the MAF sensor , one of the three wires (the other two are -ground and 5V data signal to the ECM .

The three relays at the firewall near the master cyl are the A/C compressor clutch , the electric fuel pump , and the radiator cooling fan . It is only on the eight cyl that the firewall relays control the MAF , I know it sounds weird that the different engines would have their relays in the different spots , but having had both a 6 and an 8 , and being a bit of a "technonerd" with all things electrical , you have my word that my statements are correct .

If all of the relay wires are cut at the firewall , then what , I wonder , is running your radiator fan , A/C , and fuel pump ? Yes , the fuel pump is actually run from two different sources , the fuel pump relay and the oil pressure switch . If there is no relay , there will be no 2 second prime and the pump wouldn't run till you had cranked the engine over enough to establish some oil pressure to close the switch . Do you get the 2 second prime each time ya turn the key ? Does it crank a long time for each (especially cold) start ? Likewise , there is a temp switch on the passenger's side head that will run the radiator fan if the computer controlled relay fails to operate (or was cut out) . Does your radiator fan ever come on while the engine is at operating temperature ?

it looks like only the maf stuff was cut. my fan relay connector burned up though. the car isnt running. its in a million pieces. im trying to get her back together before she gets towed. autozone only lists the parts for a v8. any ideas where i can get the maf stuff for the v6

Re: 2.8 MAF diagrams needed.

The only two places I could think of where you could get ALL of the parts to restore your MAF/electrical system would be either in the want ads here in the for sale section or at a "pick N pull" car recycling place (junkyard)

NO adap or autozone is gonna have all of the plastic pipe pieces that plumb the MAF into the manifold nor the missing wiring harnesses/connectors that have been cut . At least not as direct replacement parts , and it would take alot of electrical knowledge to get it rewired using a "universal fits all" relay and such .

Re: 2.8 MAF diagrams needed.

If your wiring harness has been butchered that bad, it might be more cost effective to just replace it than to remove it, lay it out, and chase cut/broken/removed wires all over the place.

:edit: You can get a universal relay and put it into the coolant fan wiring. For some reason, GM wiring there stinks big time and every car I've seen has wiring damage there (which, since the alt runs off of the relay, causes no charging).

Sounds to me like the idiot didn't know all he had to to was toss the engine in the car as-is and call it a day (after plugging the MAP port in the back of the intake, swapping over the EGR parts, and swapping the IAC and TPS connectors, of course). I'm just hoping that if the engine was from a junkyard, you have a spare water pump on hand...

link to 86 wiring harness, same as 87 (used to use this all of the time)... Keep in mind the engine is a VIN S. http://92b4crs.tripod.com/86wiring/86wiringindex.html

You will want to contact someone about the air intake parts. I used to have a set but ended up selling them with a bunch of other parts due to no takers. The MAF comes with the elbow to connect it to the air intake can, but you need the can, the IAT in the can, the bellows, and the radiator support box thing...
