Re: s10 to camaro
think twice before transplanting a pre-85 2.8. they are infamous for being terrible motors
that being said, the block will transplant, the transmission will not. the s10 t5 was a different body, and the shifter will not line up

Re: s10 to camaro
you would have to modify your car, like getting rid of your center console and cutting a hole in a different part of your floor pan.
Sure it's worth it?

Re: s10 to camaro

58mark has given you some great advice , and here's one more little snafu ...
Your 84 sport coup has a torque arm that connects from the rear axle to the transmission's tailshaft . Only a third gen transmission will have the appropriate mount on it's tailshaft for the torque arm ......
Sure , there ARE special conversion mounts out there for putting non third gen transmissions into our camaros and firebirds , but is it really worth all that to you , rather than just getting the right transmission to fit ? When you talk customization , hell yea , ANYTHING is possible . But !!! When ya talk getting the car back on the road as quickly and as cheaply as possible , only direct fit components are gonna accheive that .....
Good Luck with it ...

Re: s10 to camaro
You can use the S-10 transmission IF you swap tail housings and shafts (speedo gear placement). All parts from your camaro trans will swap right over to the s-10 trans. You can skip the shaft swap if you move the speedo gear to the appropriate location on the s-10 shaft and epoxy it in place. Do a search on t-5 transmissions and you will be able to make your own informed decision! Good Luck which ever way you decide to go.
P.S. swapping the tail housing will take care of all the camaro trans idiosyncrasies, the canted trans mount and the torque arm mount.

Re: s10 to camaro
If it's a T5 being swapped, it's the bellhousing that tilts the transmission. If it's a 700R4, then the only thing that should be needed is swapping the tail housing for the torque arm mount.

Re: s10 to camaro
Yes, the op said t5 from s-10 to camaro. You are correct in saying the bell housing cants the trans, which, besides shifter location and angle, is the reason you need to swap the tail housing. The tail housing contains the shifter and shift rails (which need to be swapped also) and the correct trans mount angle for the crossmember and has the torque arm mount. So, for about an hours worth of work, you can easily swap the necessary parts and virtually have a camaro t5. Check the input shaft spline to be sure it matches with the "new" trans input shaft. If it does, this is cake!

Re: s10 to camaro
Um, it's not as simple as just swapping the tail housing...
The entire shift rail needs to be swapped. The one in the S10 trans is TOO SHORT because the shifter is very close to the main case whereas the one in the F-body trans is at the end of the tail housing.
And that means that the main case has to be opened because the shift rail/fork assemblies are in the main case cover. The tail housing encloses the shift rail, but the parts are assembled in the case cover.
If you're going to do all of that, you might as well just rebuild the trans while you're at it, since you'd already be halfway there...
Again, for the small journal crank and all of the work that would be needed to convert the S10 trans over to F-body parts, you're just better off getting the better engine and proper trans in the first place. Especially due to costs. Most people are selling the transmissions whole and not in parts.

Re: s10 to camaro
Seeing how the op asked if it could be modded to work, the simple answer is yes. Do people actually READ the whole thread, or do they just jump in with answers that do not answer the question. The op has the s-10 tranny to swap the parts from, so what real cost involved? A little time will yield some great experience and a useable trans for his camaro.
